It would save literally tons of money to restrict ourselves to the role of the solar system’s puddle jumpers.

Although it's his personal behavior that will be responsible for tanking Hegseth's nomination, he is also completely unqualified for the position of Sec. of Defense. Using an analogy naming Pete Hegseth Secretary of Defense would be analogous to selecting the sales manager of a local Chevrolet dealership as CEO of General Motors because he looked good on television.

So perhaps “unnamed sources” might not be a good source to make decisions on

Not really, it probably cements Trump's support of Pete Hegseth. Donnie most likely considers Hegseth's love of the Confederacy a positive. Keep in mind that when he was president the first time Trump opposed renaming the bases.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with loving the Confederacy- it is part of our history- y’all
act as if that should be a disqualification- he will more than likely get approved as the FBI background check came up with nothing disqualifying

Wow, that is some interesting logic. If something happened, it is okay to "love" it? Even if the only reason it happened is because of an atrocity?

I'm not too sure. He can only lose three votes, two if Rubio is sworn in as SecState and his replacement has not been sworn in. I doubt Collins and Lisa M are going to support him. Haven't heard Mitch say anything either. Cramer from ND also seems to be leaning towards No. I think Ernst will support him if she knows there are not enough votes to confirm him but does not want to be seen as the person that killed Hegseth's nomination.

It is part of our history and that history includes the reason for the attempted secession of the Confederate states from the Union. They tried and failed to secede from the Union almost solely to preserve an economy based on holding human beings in hereditary chattel slavery. I guess we have a difference of opinion if you think there is nothing wrong with trying to preserve that economic system.

Do you think that this is going to be something that is going to change every time the WH changes political hands? Under Republican POTUS' it will be Ft. Bragg and under Democratic POTUS' it will be Ft. Liberty?

BTW, spent a lot of time with the Army this summer. Heard the name Ft. Bragg about 95% when referring to that base.

Kirsten Gillebrand sounds like a 14 year old yelling at her father. Hegseth should yell back, "Go to your room, young lady!"

It is silly and a waste of time and money to change the institutional name of Ft Bragg. Bluntly, it’s the inanity of raging against names and things like this that have given birth to the MAGA movement. Americans showed that the majority of us are tired of the inanity of culture wars.

I still think of the base as Ft. Bragg but then I still refer to the local NFL team as the Redskins. That being said the names of the bases were changed under a provision in the Defense Appropriations Act and I cannot see enough votes in the Senate necessary to change the names back even if the Republican President wants to do so.

The fade out will be slow for sure. Grew up near Ft Benning, still call it that and without looking it up couldn’t tell you the new name. Likewise the administration bldg of the school district in G’ville FL is named after a Confederate general though recently changed.

I'm sure they will get it slipped into the reconciliation bill.

Slavery is also part of our history. By your logic there's nothing wrong with loving slavery too.

Our Nat’l defense is one of the most complex and expensive combination of materiel, manpower, and support structures in the history of the world. We have major challenges with 2 ongoing wars we’re involved with supporting and negotiating, one involving NK troops in Europe, significant changing battlefield requirements, SMD, China threat, IT security, $850B budget, just on and on. Every one of us could name top 5 issues our DOD faces. Hopefully he doesn’t come in and start raving about made-up culture wars. Have as his top priority changing base names.
