Daniel Penny, charged in Jordan Neely death, breaks silence: ‘I am not a white supremacist’

    Penny breaks his silence.

I understand that there is another thread on the subject, but the tread OP blocked me (I assume for taking the outrageous and morally indefensible position of saying we should wait for the facts) and now not only can’t I see the OPs posts but I can’t participate in any thread he starts. Thus, I guess I need to start my own thread in order to discuss the subject with others.

The level of contentiousness is now so bad that we can only speak to people who we agree with on nearly every issue otherwise we effectively ban them from the conversation. I suppose we will need to have multiple threads on the same subject so that we can accommodate those who only want to talk to certain people.

For the record a block is different than ignore. I have no idea how one blocks another, but obviously the functionality is there.

Pretty sure I’m on ignore so you won’t see this but I’ll struggle on. Anyway he’s making a straw man argument for the most part. Most reasonable people don’t think his manslaughter was racially motivated, just that it was manslaughter.

edit I have 10 ish people on ignore (2 are absolute trolls) not because I can’t take what they post but more but because rules of the board don’t permit an appropriate response. It’s really hard I can’t even call someone a snowflake

No I took you off when I realized I couldn’t post in a thread you started. :)

Like I said, I can’t make a full judgment until all the facts are in and it sounds like he has been advised to get go into details so we may not know the details until the grand jury. He didn't have the right to take another life unless he credibly felt he or others were in danger. Seems plausible given Neely punched an old lady in the face and tried to kidnap a 7 year old girl, but you need more than plausibility.

    Sounds like you’ve been cancelled.

I do agree with you that we should always wait for the facts, but too many would rather run with what’s convenient for their own POV.

It’s fair he gets “his side” out there, but you also get that this is essentially a NY Post PR puff piece on his behalf, right? Fair to push back on any idea that he’s a white nationalist, if he’s not. Of course haven’t seen any legit media make the claim that he was, nor have I seen any evidence to indicate that he was. There maybe is internet chatter or people making assumptions which is wrong without evidence, so if he is “clean” in that regard it’s fair to push back on that narrative.

But it’s also not like the case hinges on him being a white nationalist. It’s not like it’s “oh, you aren’t a neo-Nazi? Ok, free to go”. It’s a question about whether his use of force was reasonable or justified. Race is sort of irrelevant to the actual legal case against him. No doubt the homeless man was acting crazy, also no doubt the chokehold killed him. Was there threat of death or imminent bodily harm? Certainly not visible in the video. That’s the problem with chokeholds. It’s lethal technique. But not unlike shooting someone, if you take a life better have damn good reason. I don’t think mental illnesses or even past criminal issues gives clearance. Literally, it has to be in that moment, credible threat of bodily harm. I think zero chance Perry personally could claim this. Could a passenger have his back or claim they felt that level of threatened? Possible, but may or may not be credible, although ultimately a jury should decide cases like this.

how do you know when you have all the facts? does a light go off, what? Pretty much daily there are stories about facts rolling in 30, 40, 50 years later. many times millions

I’m all for a fair trial in court but it doesn’t mean I can’t have an informed opinion of guilt. The other day some one was saying we shouldn’t rush to judgement in the Idaho mom who’s hubby was poisoned. I look at the fact set and can safely saw quilt. OJ and Bryan Kohlberger to.

Issues and legal cases usually settle out once thoroughly investigated or tried. But that’s different than people running with a narrative out of convenience when there is not yet many facts or even context in many cases.

why does it matter if people run with a narrative based on the available facts? I mean if it exposes you to liability that is one thing, but what about you, me & folks in general. Why does it matter? Should we only report weather in a historical fashion? Yesterday it was 80 & rainy. yay

Again I don’t know what precipitated the chokehold. That is not on the video. If it was just a case of yelling and throwing a jacket, and that’s it, then it’s probably manslaughter. If there were specific credible threats made by Neely, then it starts to look different. You had 2 other people assisting, so presumably they felt Penny was doing the right thing.

The issue is Sharpton, AOC and others from the get to made it about race as well has half the internet. Narratives have been created that he was this poor Michael Jackson impersonator that was choked out by a racist marine. Unfortunately managing the media narrative is important if he wants to get a fair trial.

To me it matters because in today’s world too many people never follow up to get the facts. They let the first report they hear become the facts because they like the answer.

To answer your question, it really shouldn’t matter as I am fine. But misinformation breeds a lot of bad things.

Getting a fair trial and an impartial jury is difficult if you have been painted guilty by the media.

Not sure about that. A lot of these higher profile media driven cases actually get off. Certainly doesn’t seem to lock in a guilty verdict.

Of course most of those were NOT on video. The Chauvin case secured a conviction mostly due to the egregious nature of what was on video. This one isn’t as depraved (or lengthy), but it’s not good for the defendant. Maybe more video will come out from beforehand.
