Is this corrupt? Because it sure seems like giving the judge who will preside over your impeachment $3m is corrupt Pro-Paxton group gives $3 million to impeachment trial judge Dan Patrick. In a campaign-finance report published Tuesday, Patrick — who is not up for reelection until 2026 — reported a $1 million contribution and a $2 million loan from Defend Texas Liberty PAC. The political action committee was by far his biggest benefactor on the report, which covered Patrick’s fundraising from June 19-30.
Wait a minute. The Texas Attorney General, a Republican, was impeached by a Republican-lead Texas house? From what I’ve consumed on Too Hot these last few years, that could never happen. Are you sure that’s right?
Your attempt at sarcasm missed the mark. Not only is it a witch hunt, but led by Democrats. Sound familiar? Pro-Paxton group gives $3 million to impeachment trial judge Dan Patrick Some excerpts: The PAC's stance on Paxton's impeachment is well-known. Shortly after the House impeached Paxton, Defend Texas Liberty PAC sent text messages to GOP voters asking them to call their state senators and tell them to “stop this madness and end this witch hunt.” It has also made clear it will politically target House Republicans who voted for impeachment. “Defend Texas Liberty will ensure that every Republican voter in Texas knows just what a sham the Texas House has been this session and just how absurd this last minute Democrat led impeachment effort is,” the group said in a May 26 tweet.
I was merely chuckling because certain people on Too Hot believe that Republicans are all bad and can never do a good thing. They believe the Rs are rotten to the core. They have a special contempt for Texas Republicans. Lo and behold, the Republicans in the Texas House did the right thing. That upsets the natural order in the Too Hot universe.
I'm just going to point out that Paxton was charged with securities fraud eight years ago, and the separate corruption issue emerged three years ago when he fired a bunch of senior leaders in his office for reporting him to the FBI. So it makes one ask why suddenly do the right thing in May 2023?
That describes me. This may be a counter-example, but I am waiting for a deep read to see if it is motivated by something very different than condemnation. Politics are always present, but I want to to see if this is something beyond the usual. I recall that Paxton is not considered as aligned with Abbott so waiting to read more. But this may fall into the same aspect of generalizing about race, i.e., if you attribute all Republican moves to racism, you will be wrong 2-3% of the time
I understand. But at the same instance there is already a conflict of interest. So too early to give the Texas Republicans the victory because the other Texas Republicans are trying to put a "fix" in the way.
2-3%? Fortunately, there are very few thoroughly bad people in this world who have absolutely no redeeming quality at all. If it were not so, the world would be a whole lot worse off. What you’re saying is half the country are bad people, and that the representatives of half the people are thoroughly bad. I just can’t accept that.
I didn't say anything about bad people, other than 100% of all people are bad/fallen. Manichaeism and all that. Metaphor. Any criteria that can describe group behaviors with acceptable accuracy cannot describe individual behavior with near the same accuracy. Talking about systemic organizing principles as applied. Certain group traits explain most but not all of group behaviors
TLDR version ... Republicans are okay people, the proof is that one is getting impeached for corruption...
Wait a minute. You described Republicans as follows: But this may fall into the same aspect of generalizing about race, i.e., if you attribute all Republican moves to racism, you will be wrong 2-3% of the time. You just said that 97%-98% of Republicans are racists. Are you saying racists are not bad people? I confused with what you’re trying to say.
I'm not making statements about individuals. Don't get my statement again and see if I was describing individuals. Edited to add a paradigmatic example Coincidental relevant FB memory Interesting statement in a book I am reading on The Troubles, apropos of some of our recent politics. Nothing new under the sun. The Orange Order, a Protestant organisation viewed by Catholics as bigoted and anti-Catholic but regarded by most Protestants as an important guardian of their heritage, held an important place in political life.

Katherine Banks has resigned as the university's president. In a letter sent to A&M System Chancellor John Sharp Thursday evening, Banks wrote, "The recent challenges regarding Dr. [Kathleen] McElroy have made it clear to me that I must retire immediately. The negative press is a distraction from the wonderful work being done here." The decision comes after the university's faculty senate passed a resolution Wednesday to create a fact-finding committee into the mishandling of the hiring of McElroy. During that meeting, Banks told faculty members that she did not approve changes to an offer letter that led a prospective journalism professor to walk away from negotiations amid
So you’re saying collectively Republicans are racist, just not individually. OK, I’m not gonna split hairs over this. On the other hand, your book recommendations seem to be good. Is the book called The Troubles or does it have a different name? I just finished The Swamp you recommended and so I might try this one.
Keeping two factors in mind, Paxton lacks the charisma of certain other much higher profile Republican politician and the office of AG of Texas is not the same of the presidency. Texas Republicans never worshiped Ken Paxton as if he was a cult-like figure. I would also add that in American politics whether at the state or federal level sometimes witches are real.
