Reason number 1,000,002 why the lockdowns and school closures were such a disaster. Of course we will have the grifters and covidiots saying the lockdowns and school closures didn't cause this increase. I remember I was ridiculed for saying this would happen. Looks like unfortunately I was right.

    https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/4051212-cdc-pandemic-teen-homicide-suicide-rates/

The homicide rate for older teenagers in the United States and the suicide rate for those in their early 20s rose during the pandemic to the highest it has been in at least 20 years, according to research published Thursday.

A study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) analyzed homicide and suicide rates among those ages 10-24 from 2001-21.

The largest annual increase in homicide rates for those aged 15-19 was a 38 percent increase between 2019 and 2020.

In 2020, the rate of homicide deaths among older teenagers was 12.3 per 100,000, a significant jump from the 8.9 per 100,000 rate in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021 — which is the most recent data available — the rate of homicide deaths was 12.8 per 100,000 in the age group.

They decided they’d rather die than live under Trump’s presidency. Can’t blame ‘em.

You rated my post off-topic when it was you that went off topic. Can't make this crap up. I guess if you didn't like the data you just threw a "but trump" in there. Good one, hadn't heard that before...

LOL. Where is my boy MD? He was saying there wouldn't be an increase. I said at the time we have to wait years to find out since suicide stats take so long to publish. It's Friday though, not Monday. And I was saying I was right then, so it's not like I'm just now taking credit for it. Good try though...

How the hell am I supposed to know your posting history with another poster on this board? Maybe shoot him a DM?

With regards to the pandemic - I think most people realized there was going to be collateral damage from shutting everything down. Given what we knew at the time it wad the right call and it would be same call made if it happened again tomorrow. I don't understand why you're so obsessed with this.

Obsessed with what? The fact the lockdowns and school closures were an awful decision? Well, until I hear our Govt leaders say this won't ever happen again then I'll stop being obsessed. Because it seems by taking zero responsibility for what happened they will do it again since there was no repercussions.

WRONG. It only looks like an awful decision in hindsight. It was the prudent decision at the time and would be the same decision made today if faced with the same circumstances. Get over it.

These stories continue to speak volumes about how bad parenting has become in this country. Shameful that parents are so bad that being forced to deal with them every day has led to a huge increase in teen suicide.

95 should move to a country that didn't shut down for the pandemic. Good luck finding one.

LOL. Nope. Sweden didn't lockdown and they have the lowest all-cause deaths since the pandemic began. You are part of the problem thinking it was ok to lockdown and shut down schools. I will not get over it at all. You and the US response was 100% wrong. The data is undeniable.

Nobody expects you to know his full posting history. However, if you are going to claim it is Monday morning quarterbacking, it's reasonable for him to comment on his previous posts. However, there were certainly many people who brought up mental health concerns at the time. Even if you didn't remember his posts, I imagine you would remember that.

    Agree and disagree.
I do think we did what we thought we should. I don't believe it would be handled the same. Especially when it comes to the younger among us.

I think a hybrid approach that protects the vulnerable while allowing the young and healthy to not have two years of their lives taken away at such an important age.

So I agree. We did what we felt was best early on, but i think we would have an evolved position in the future

Move to Sweden then. Overall, lockdowns and lower covid death rates are highly correlated. Now you're going to cherry-pick a few countries to 'prove' that you are right.

As for the CDC study, it shows that teenage suicide has been on the rise for the last 20 years. And homicides went up across the nation as a whole. That is typical of recessions and there would have been a recession in 2020 with or without official lockdowns.

You said there would be an increase in suicides in 2020. And bizarrely kept trying to bet me about it. I said that isn't how suicides work during traumatic events, as people tend to commit suicide during the adjustment period back to normal life (I.e., that they would increase in later periods but not initially). I provided the context of Katrina to show that.

Suicides decreased by 3% in 2020, contrary to your claims (a fact you still won't admit). So yeah, you are lying to cover for being wrong (again). Your ego simply can't handle how wrong you were. So here we are again, with you trying to BS yourself into reconstructing that ego. Good luck with that.

I have used my own kids as an anecdotal story previously. The issue with kids is perspective. The lack of perspective leads them to think things are more important than they are. My oldest daughter lost her Soph/Jr years of HS for the most part.
No proms, no football games, isolation from social groups. As a parent we try to teach perspective but it is very hard for them to grasp without the life experience we have as parents.

It was clear that she was deeply impacted. Thankfully she has a strong family and a strong life foundation and worked through it. Now take that same situation and place it on a kid that doesnt have safety nets and support structures and thus even less perspective.

If you have teen agers you saw it. Maybe not directly in your kids, but in someone elses.

Until the 2 weeks came and went, you are correct... then more restrictions appeared in several states. And it kept getting worse for nearly 2 years in some places.

I don't think most states and the feds handled it well with respect to the length of time involved. The incessant booster shots mandates that the military, companies/corporations and airlines required had NOTHING to do with health. So they failed on that level too. They failed on more levels than I want to mention.

Those lock-downs and restrictions... mandates negatively effected our young people more than anyone thought it would.
