Well, maybe not pine trees directly, but from a waste product of paper mills. The chemical is beta-pinene. Scientists have developed a continuous process to manufacture common pharmaceuticals like Tylenol and ibuprofen from this chemical. This news is at least a small positive for global warming and pollution in general. Scientists have discovered a groundbreaking new way to make painkillers like Tylenol and ibuprofen out of a surprising source
Isn't Aspirin made from tree bark or something like that? Why is this new? I think they should find cures for Glaucoma by studying the eyes of Barracudas... not even joking.
My scientific brain at work.....Dogs lift their leg and pee on trees...Ah Ha maybe dog pee is the answer.
Willow bark contains salicylic acid, which is close (but not identical) to acetyl salicylic acid, which is aspirin. It has some of the same effects, but also some side effects (diarrhea, heartburn, and vomiting are possible). You should definitely pick aspirin if you have a choice. Over 99.9% of aspirin is made from petrochemicals. Making aspirin from paper mill waste not only reduces fossil fuel usage, but also reduces the amount of a waste stream. Win-win. Some of the top water polluters in the U.S. are paper & pulp mills.
