I did forget to mention that the oline play was horrendous. Aside from that, I felt the rest of the offense did okay.
How can you determine their D compared to the SEC, when the SEC didn't play anyone except us and SCAR who both lost to quality opponents?
Agree. These were my first two picks in our "Pick 'em" Contest. I am sooooo glad I don't have a gambling problem.
Agree with this. I didn't see overthinking as a problem. I saw some real lack of discipline out there.
I think this is getting overblown with how many times posters mention it. Our OL was not whipped for 60 minutes. There were times Utah brought more than we could block and Mertz didn't recognize the rush. We also didn't give the running game a chance (Trell 3 carries?!). I don't think Mertz played as well as some here think and I don't believe the coaching staff had a great gameplan by not allowing the running game to develop. Hope to see both improve moving forward. One final note: I thought Mertz and his WRs weren't on the same page at times. I hope McNeese is about cleaning that up as well.
Having watched a film review. Their LB's were completely selling out to stop the run. It was consistently creating huge holes for slants and such right behind them. Which is where my issues with BN the playcaller start, we have no quick game. It feels like it has been years since UF just ran a quick slant and let our WR athletes a chance to make a play. I also agree that the OL was not whipped the whole game, a lot of breakdowns involved TE's getting cooked and RB's less than optimal help. It is really hard to run against 7-8-9 man boxes. Outside of Bama, not even recent Bama, you simply will not have success running into stacked boxes. The one good counter we had were the screens, and if you go back and look they were all quite successful, which is part 2 of not liking BN the playcaller. If you got something working, do it until THEY stop you.
Hopefully one day it will accomplish something, because so far i do not see anyone biting, or it revealing any opportunities.
I have said this many times, BN's O is really easy to stop, just put an extra man in the box and the O is half-dead. The so called play-action deception in his system is useless. If I were the DC I would do the same thing. I'd tell my LBs who's responsible for the RB don't even read the QB to decide dropping into coverage or not. Just watch the RB, if you see the RB didn't get the ball, cover him or rush the QB. This way the play action fake is basically useless except slowing the passing game down. Let them completed a few passes, it's OK. It will not be consistent, wait till obvious passing downs (which would eventually come) and play pass D.
I can't say I agree with that. A color commentator makes a senseless remark and people go off the deep end. All offenses, every one, is based on trying to deceive the defense on what your play is. Otherwise, you'd run the same routes from the same formations every time. Now, I think what herbstreit was trying to further commentate on the pump fakes, which is not a staple of BN's O. I'm not sure why Mertz was doing that so much in this game. The play action pulls the LBs up creating space for receivers behind them and if you watch film, it worked at least until late game. We did run screens and slants successfully unlike last year. Not great quick game, but better than last year for sure. You'll see play fakes on obvious passing downs mainly for route timing more than anything else. Billy's O runs a lot more RPO than people realize which puts a lot of the decision making on the qb. We desperately need improvement at the TE position and our OL play in general. I can accept getting physically beat on a play from time to time, but there were more than a few mental errors that just can't happen. We still moved the ball and really just stopped ourselves.
That's not true, you run your route according to D scheme, personnel, and coverage. Yes, I'd run same routes from the same formations every time if the D use the same coverage with the same personnel all the time. It would be too easy. "The play action pulls the LBs up creating space for receivers behind them and if you watch film, it worked at least until late game. " Like I said, you don't need to pull my LB up, my LB is up against the RBs regardless you try to pull or not because I have very little respect for your passing game. I'll not let you run, period. " it worked at least until late game" It never worked. That's why we're 1/13 on obvious passing downs. And until late game when UU went preventive D, we didn't even have that single 1
how were we worst prepared “by far” and then USC was “a close second”? If you waited till tonight, I think LSU and Clemson fans might disagree.
I'd be happy if our offense learns the concept of TIME. I think we can fix most of the dumb stuff from week one...
If, as it was reported/said, that two ST coaches were the culprit(s), then losing one of the two can be done easily right now.
