Our Defense is too Complex

Okay, on your first point that sounds like what I saw too. The defenders were also bunched up to closely.

The zone defense is not going to work as well as I would like becasue our players have all grown up from Pop Warner through high school playing some form of man to man, man-press defense. It an be done be why even complicate the defense in the fist place? We should have enough talent to rotate player in and out becasue Man coverages takes too mcuh out of our DBs and Safeties.

As for the second point I kind of agree on, but stunts and twists are something that even the biggest D-lineman should be taught. We need more twists, IMHO. and we have to teach our defense to get out of being held by the offense. Too often they get held in one place and they never seem to escape the holds...

    That frustrates me.

One more thing I have been talking about since last year... when we played UGA in 2022. That 3rd quarter we played mostly man-press and we force 3 turnovers... played lights out great, but alas... we ran out of DB and Safeties. That kind of play requires many backups to play because the back-end players get fatigued. I don't think we played zone that entire quarter and we looked like the Gators of the resent past... lights out great.

But a hybrid defense might be the answer we've been looking for, becasue we need at least a cover one or cover two with some man-press underneath to be more effective and safe from the short pass and the long ball.

DB's cannot keep up with opposing receivers. Confusion reigns , 4th and 17 and no pressure on their QB. What!

If I recall correctly we ran 73% man vs LSU last week, historical worst performance. Broad conclusions of defensive schemes based on anecdotal evidence is silly. Personnel and opposition success rates vs defense types should dictate game plan.

Reasonable points and i gave an opinion on how to play the 4th down in a cat coverage with man free or 2 dog based on blitz decision

We get held inside because we dont have our second move rip, swim, spin we are still plodding and slow. Situationally, i agree twisting linemen messes with the OL but not with DH god no he cant replace the other DL before the play is over. We need a jet package of 5 DL with 1 a stand up guy to bring more mass at impact we arent fast enough this year and rush right into the arms of the OL

We ultimately agree on many things wrt defense and defensive issues

Sounds like we need some real hard nosed, no sleep, visit every program, non stop, recruiting with people that know their sh__.
Do we have the talent and energy and motivation to do so?
When someone hands you a ton of cash before you make the first phone call it takes that edge off....most people that is.

Who said it was sarcasm? You apparently can see that our coaches aren't planning ahead for substitutions and know how to better use the athletes. You seemed pretty confident in your analysis.

Personally I try not to throw my 2 cents into things that are above my pay grade, which is why I usually stick to remarking on fundamentals, execution and effort. These three things are lacking and until they improve it won't really matter if we get slight upgrades in talent. To be perfectly honest it's impossible to really judge our talent level as a fan without them, unless you really thing our guys aren't capable of them which is a ridiculous take of a D1 athlete in my opinion.

I agree as I think anyone who has played sports could teach things like tackling, lining up correctly, knowing which jersey to wear, not leaving a guy open 20 yards down field on 4th and 17. The reasons we're losing.

That jet package was what I thought AA was bringing to our defense. We use standard old fashioned 3 and 4 man lines with like you said, no swim, rip, spin moves to get off of their holding.

So far our defense on the front-end and in the back-end of our defense are not up to where I thought we'd be. However, sure... beeing honest we have had some success on defense but we are too injured... to inexperienced and the defense must be too complex for our young men to get right 100% of the time. Maybe we do need to simplify it.

Our big butts on both sides of the ball lack mobility, so some plays, whether stunt, twist or pulling, put them at a disadvantage. We still have folks on both sides of the ball playing outside of their natural position.
I think that is one reason all the backup OL looked okay late in the game, they are more mobile. That was a big change that Urbs wanted. Fast, strong, athletic lineman.
As others stated, expecting our +325 DL to twist to another gap and fill it in time is fools gold. At this point, we have zero studs on our lines. Potential to grow into being a disrupter is there for a couple.

Possibly, or we don’t have the pieces to make it work efficiently either way not much season left to to endure defensively.

in obvious passing situations I want 4-5 get off guys pinning their ears back and racing to the spot winner gets the credit(sack). Not being pushed past the above or mired at the los. Oh well

In Zone you don’t often have defenders bunched up. That’s what happens in man defense. Kind of obvious really since … you know … zone. Kind of the point of zone defense. I do know I don’t see much complaining about the previous defensive series where Armstrong ran the same package and got a stop. Maybe one of the defense experts can do a compare and contrast. Last thing I saw was it was 4-17 and it looked like we had them stopped and then somebody made a mistake.

  17. We have a defense? 4th and 17, and they melt like chocolate in a fondue.

I have yet to see receivers run patterns where they all bunch up down field... unless it a hail Mary end of game pass play.
