OU Asst. Coach Cale Gundy resigns after reading "shameful word"

That seems excessive if he just read the word right off a player's iPad. There must be more to the story...

 

Who among us has not "accidentally" read the n-word out loud in front of a bunch of black people? It could happen to anyone guys.

 

Did he have to sound the word out? I am finding this portrayal of the incident hard to believe.

 

Should the player who wrote the word on his iPad face any discipline for writing such a shameful and hurtful word?

 

Yeah, there's no way it happened the way he described it lol

Got to be more to the story. For instance, were there consequences for the player who supposedly wrote the word? Does the single and supposedly inadvertent utterance of the N-word necessitate giving up one’s job despite years as a coach? (This sounds like an Al Franken type overreaction.) How do the black players feel about this? It’s a mistake to think they ignore context and get bent out of shape every time they hear that word.

 

This is the stupidest resignation I’ve heard about in a long time. The virtually lifetime WR coach read what was on a player’s iPad screen during a meeting (like when teachers used to read notes passed between classmates). It was apparently lyrics from a song. The coach was trying to embarrass the player for not paying attention in the meetings. And good for him!

This is not grounds for termination or resignation. This is not grounds for even condemnation! This is not even a story.

is not some summer intern; this is a guy who has spent virtually his entire life playing and starring and then working for OU.

Add to this the fact that Venables accepted the resignation so quickly, leads me to believe there are far more things to this story.

 

Assuming the player actually wrote it and is Black, obviously not.

If he's resigning, clearly some guys had a problem with it. And yes, some Black people understandably might have a huge problem with a white coach loudly saying the n-word during a team meeting. He's a grown man. He knew better.

In the professional world, actions have consequences. Uttering a racial slur during a work meeting when your job relies on having the respect and trust of your mostly Black "employees" is a massive error. It's the sort of error that will cost you your job.

Coach Venables's statement says it all:

I’ll wait for Paul Harvey to tell me “the rest of the story” cause there’s clearly got to be more.

 

According to the article, he is a man, and he's 50.

 

If I had to bet, Gundy has been there for forever and wasn’t meshing with the new staff. This was just the final straw.
Because firing a guy (and that’s essentially what this was), for reading something a kid wrote after a lifetime of good service is just dumb. If Mixon is right with all he has done for people, do the kids benefit more from him staying and learning from his mistake, or leaving? It’s dumb for everyone.
But this also gets back to what I have always said about that word, if folks want it gone, then it had to be gone from everywhere. You can’t say it’s ok for one group and not smother. Either it’s bad or it’s not. The kid faces zero consequences and a man loses his reputation and 25 years of service.

 

This is a dumb notion. You can absolutely say it's okay for one group and not for another. In fact, almost every white person understands that just fine, including the coach who resigned here.

 

Seems like a bad comparison to me. There should be consequences for what is on people's phones or ipads? They weren't sharing it or reciting it. The player's offense was not paying attention in a meeting, which I'm sure there are consequences for, coaches do notice that. Its just that one completely overreacted and instead of embarrassing the player, he made a fool of himself.

 

So does this mean that Jews can call each other the "K" word without consequence? Or Asians call each other the "C" word? How about does this mean that white people can call each other "cracker" without consequence?

The acceptable use of a word in a language gives it legitimacy. And even moreso if one group is allowed to use a word while another isn't. It shouldn't be viewed as acceptable for ANYONE to use these words with racist intent regardless of the race of those using them.
