The autism / vaccine story is one of the few that we actually we do have a good grasp on, and you are correct that money did influence the results.

It’s starts with Andrew Wakefield’s 1998 Lancet paper that claimed to find a link between autism and the MMR vaccine. This study was on just 12 children, who were not randomly sampled and lacked a control group. So not a great study. Then in 2010 it was found that even this data was falsified.

Journalist Brian Deer found that Wakefield was paid over half a million dollars to find a case against vaccines by lawyers hoping to sue the vaccine manufacturers, and months before publication of his article, Wakefield himself had applied for a patent on a different kind of measles vaccine, so he stood to make a lot of money.

For all the subsequent attempts to find this link, it’s never once been replicated, including a 1999 study on 498 UK children (also published in The Lancet), a 2002 study on 500,000+ children in Finland, and another from 2002 on 500,000 children in Denmark. At this point, the evidence against this link is a mountain, and the evidence for is almost non-existent.
