Fall Ball Concludes with Orange & Blue Series - Florida Gators

Above explains that last 3 fall ball scrimmages are the O&B World Series held this Thurs/Sat/Sun. Guys won't be playing Friday because quite a few of them will be helping the Dugout Club with their annual golf tournament.

I won't be at the Thursday scrimmage due to work schedule and getting ready for the tournament. I plan on attending Sat & Sun at noon and will post threads for those games.

Really wish I could be there Thursday but have an event down in Clermont that night. Hopefully your "Spies" can come thru again.

lost some great players off last year’s CWS finalists, but there’s no shortage of young talent itching for an opportunity.

Nice start to the series today, Orange won the 5 inning scrimmage, I think 6-4. Cags and Shelnut had nice HRs, Shelton had a 3 RBI double. The pitchers generally were guys who had limited innings this fall. All were frosh except Purnell- Memendez, Witmer, Philpot, Smith, Clemente(RFr). It appeared Evans and Coppola were captains, they were yelling at each other from the dugouts and Evans did a great Sully impression strolling to the mound after Shelton's big hit. Good to see that both dugouts were active and loud supporting their guys. Haven't heard, but it may be a steak for winners, beans for losers incentive. Crowd was no bigger than a typical scrimmage.

Paidinfull mentioned poor McDonald whose brace was huge, he even had a wrap on his right leg, too. Hate to say it, but better if he fell off a scooter than needing TJ surgery.

Another nice five innings on Saturday. Orange stays ahead on the cumulative score, 6-3 on Thursday, it now is 11-6. An interesting twist was that each team started an inning with the bases loaded and Orange got three in,Blue got two, both had two LOB. The best hit if the day-IMO- was an infield single from Donay. It was a high hopper to Thomas charging from third. He made a clean play with a sharp throw, but Donay beat it out. At first, I considered it routine, but bang, he was clearly safe. I don't think Thomas has the quickness of Colby Halter, both attacking the ball and getting the throw off, but he is a competent fielder. Credit goes to Donay who really got down the line. He later was advanced to second and scored on a single.

There have been indications that Shelton and Thomas were winning the jobs at SS and 3B, but Landon Russell is making a move. Most of his early work was in RF, but he has been working more at SS, including full time at SS for Blue. Preseason work will determine who wins positions, but if anyone pushes Shelton to 3B, it will be Russell. His fielding seems consistent and very smooth and he's hitting well. The other newcomer infielders- Albert, Mummau and Martinez have played good D, but only Martinez has hit well enough to play a lot. Saying that, he hasn't played in this series. He has been dressed for pregame workouts, but hasn't, done BP or fielding work. No visible wraps or braces, which makes me hope there's no major injury.

Cags is certainly at the top of the team at the plate, with not so many HR, but a ton of singles to the left side. I perceive Shelnut is not far behind him and may even have better numbers, If someone will have a breakout season in '24, good chance it will be Shelnut. Guy has shown the best OF defense, just ahead of Robertson, but Donay may end up in RF with top speed and a strong arm. Shelnut can play corner OF and corner IF, but he WILL be on the field. One day to go for fall ball, with lots of competion among position players and pitchers. Last season was much more settled at this point, but while there are fewer players who have nailed down jobs, there will be a more promising group on the bench capable of beating out opening day starters. I sure hope we get to see stats for all of fall to make more objective assessment- in case Sully asks for our help deciding who plays.

Martinez has a wrap on his leg around the knee which has been there since before the Stetson games. He was on crutches before that weekend. Agree that he has looked like someone who can handle the position and maybe swing the bat well enough to stay in the lineup.

Thanks for your insights. IMO Can’t see Landon winning the shortstop job over Shelton. Shelton has been surprisingly good with his glove. If there is an issue with him it seems to be arm strength but the arm is good enough at the college level.

Mummau Impressed with his bat today and also starting to see two freshmen pitchers who could be major contributors in the spring.

  11. It's certainly a high bar playing SS at UF and like Sully has said you try to get hs SS's and move them around because they're the best defenders, glad to hear Shelton appears to be measuring up there.

Some observations on the newbies: Peterson and McNeillie look ready to contribute in significant ways this season. I could even see Peterson in a weekend slot before too long in the season. In Saturday's O&B game, Peterson FB was consistently 95-96 and hit 98 on one pitch- and with good movement. He also buckled a few knees with breaking pitches although I thought umpire squeezed him a few times on calls on outside corner to RH hitters. He looks the part. McNellie not as fast but hit 94 on some pitches but his change-up is a gem and his out pitch. Both players looked ready.
I was also impressed by Mummau hitting approach at the plate-- he stung the ball with two hits and if one reads his HS scouting report he is outstanding with the glove with strong arm. Tough to see him getting much paying time this season but can see him in the infield in 2025. Russell appears ready to contribute and will await to see more of his output in spring scrimmages- he has serious speed, strong arm and can play multiple positions. Sully seems set with Thomas at third and Shelton at SS but both have less than elite arms so there may still be some possibilities for others to get PT, especially at third.

Cags just hit a bomb in batting practice to right field, the outfield fence gate was open and the outfielder ran about fifteen feet through the gate to make the catch drawing chuckles from the spectators

What’s the story on Caden McDonald? Has a heavy brace on his right arm, looks like possible surgery and a sleeve on his right leg.

An incredible ending to the Orange vs. Blue series. The Blue trailed 11-7 entering the final inning. Our projected closer Blake Purnell was roughed up as the Blue sent 10 batters to the plate and tied the score on a bases clearing line drive double off the right field fence by Mikey Robertson. The Blue loaded the bases again against Purnell as he struggled to throw strikes but finally retired Heyman on a fly out to center.
In the bottom of the ninth with the score tied 11-11, Grayson Smith hit the lead off batter then struck out Mummaw. I believe it was Aston Wilson who stole second and then proceeded to third on the overthrow of second. The batter at the plate, Jaylen Guy then hit a long opposite field SAC fly to score the winning run as the Orange team stormed the field and mobbed Guy pulling off his shirt!

Cade Kurland had the only two hits of the day for the Orange, two hard hit line drives. The kid is money. But the star of the day was clearly Robertson who was on base nearly every time up. He’s going deep in every count and drawing lots of walks. His on base percentage has got to be high for the camp. He’s also hitting the ball hard.
Starting pitchers for today were veterans Cade Fisher and Ryan Slater who were both outstanding. First pair of relievers Jake Clemente struggled and threw a lot of pitches but only one run in 2 innings. Robert Satin was nails with two scoreless innings.
No homeruns today as it was cool and the air damp and heavy. Jac hit one ball over the Berm foul that was crushed but that was about it. Robertson’s line drive appeared to hit the fence on the fly and was scorched.
