Trump Admin Emails Air Traffic Controllers: Quit Your Jobs

Government personnel received a strange request from the Trump administration in their inboxes just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday. It urged federal workers to quit their “lower productivity jobs” and seek employment in the private sector.

The mass email urged employees—including those at the Federal Aviation Administration (F.A.A.)—to quit less than 24 hours after a plane crash in Washington D.C., which killed 67 people and was suspected to have been caused by air traffic controller staffing shortages.

“We encourage you to find a job in the private sector as soon as you would like to do so,” stated the email sent by the Office of Personnel Management, The New York Times reported. “The way to greater American prosperity is encouraging people to move from lower productivity jobs in the public sector to higher productivity jobs in the private sector.”

In the form of Frequently Asked Questions, the email also encouraged employees who did choose to leave their jobs, to take on a second job, or to vacation to their “dream destination” while still on the payroll before permanently leaving. That advice is contradictory to years old regulations that have prohibited federal employees from picking up second sources of income.

This wasn’t targeted to ATC employees, it went to all federal workers except those currently exempt. Right now I’m waiting for an interpretation of the offer to see if I am eligible. Will find out on Monday.

When companies do it, it’s generally targeted so that they can control the impact and maximize the benefit. It’s also done respectfully with some appreciation for the time they put in. My company last sent it to people over 50 with 10 years with the company for instance (the higher earners) and offered a years pay with benefits.
Sending it to 2 million people or whatever number it is is just lazy and dangerous. There are a whole lot of important roles that could be adversely impacted if a high percentage take the offer and leave. ATC is just one example.

Agree, my post was more to the tone of the email, the lack of planning or prep etc. It’s been a common theme this week.
I know you are in the gvt but I also work with some government folks every day who genuinely care and do important work. They’ve all given decades to what they do. They have had an awful week, almost all of it preventable with even a modicum of common sense or empathy.
Some might eventually take the offer, but it doesn’t make this week and less silly.

Did anyone say it was targeted to ATC only?

Will your productivity go up when djtgubmbtsevices inc hires you for same job?

The implication was in the title. I won’t get hired for the same job. I would take a government contractor job.
