It takes a lot to get from 16 to 5. And I believe we will win a NC before Georgia gets to that level. they’ve done nothing in basketball since I have been alive. They have not even mad an Elite Eight. They have done nothing in track and Field, baseball, gymnastics, volleyball, softball, and soccer. We have won in tennis and golf. it sucks to be a Georgia Bulldog. All they have is football and that will be fleeting as we found out.
They won't get to 5, we won't get another Natty. That's just the way it is. They're on track to dominate the landscape for the next half decade. Sadly, we opened the door for them.
If the only sport you care about is football, I guess, but what other sport is Georgia good at and prior to last year they had won nothing. As for academics, plenty of subjectivity, and happy to be #5 public school, but very concerned that it may not last.
Ok but does 16 vs 5 have any real world implications on the average student? Sure it’s nice a handful of academics get a few more research dollars to play with but is that superior to the collective joy of elite football? Again it’s one thing if UGA students came out making statistically less for the same degree as UF students… but that doesn’t seem to be the case UF sports have been trending down. Football and basketball have been average to below average P5 over the last decade. Softball, baseball, and gymnastics have been weaker recently than before (albeit still good). Are we a track, swimming, and tennis school? UF doesn’t register as an elite, or even good, athletic school anymore to the average sports fan.
365 days later (when CBN was formally introduced as Head Football Coach), we are on our way. Out with the old and in with the new!!! "The change, it had to come, we knew it all along....." We did not have the talent to play NCAA Title football, and although it is painful to lose players such as Chief Borders, it was necessary to let the vast majority portal out. The recruiting by Billy and staff is so far stellar. We are assembling the elite talent pipeline, and it will be sustainable. So sustainable that we shall NOT have to ever do a rebuild like this ever again. We will be WAY better in 23 than we were in 22. No question. And in 24, we are coming for the NCAA Title. Billy Napier is THE MAN, and he knows EXACTLY what he is doing and how to build a sustainable powerhouse. I cannot wait for the 2023 Identity Phase to begin. It's been a long time in coming, and the pain is weakness leaving the program, for good. In us marches Florida, always and forever.
I don't see a title in 24, but we'll be much better then than we are now. The only way to match Georgia and Alabama is to recruit 4 and 5 stars and develop them. At least now, we have a coach and staff that believe that and are willing to do the work to get there. We did not have that before.
I think we get there pretty fast, my brother. You are right that this staff has and knows the vision, but moreover, is willing to do the work. Man, I cannot wait to see this unfold. This is why we wanted Napier, and why he came to us.
As much as Gator fans love to make fun of scUM and f$u (and believe me it's one of my favorite pasttimes) we haven't been relevant for 10+ years. I've gotten to a point that the losses don't even hurt all that much and I'm pleasantly surprised when we win the occasional game.
Yea, lets not consider the recent championships in track, tennis and swimming. Baseball won a NC in 2017, that's not light years ago. I get that football is far and away #1, but it seems that if it is not football/basketball it doesnt count as a sport around here sometimes. The bar for the all around sports program has been set high which I like, and the overall sports program has fallen back a bit tho still at a much higher level than when I was in school. The AD needs to pick up the slack tho and quickly. However, to say that the overall athletic program is "not good" is nonsense.
Sadly, this. While I do not enjoy kicking my alma mater, since 2010, Florida won 101 games. These teams won more games than we did (alphabetically): Alabama Auburn Baylor Clemson Florida State Georgia Iowa Kansas State LSU Michigan Michigan State Notre Dame Ohio State Oklahoma Oklahoma State Oregon Penn State Texas A&M TCU USC Wisconsin To put it in perspective, Mississippi State and Pitt are close behind us. And no, it's not because of that dreaded "SEC gauntlet. We're sixth in the SEC in wins since 2010. * From 1980-1992, we won 96 games with sanctions and far fewer games played. * From 1990-2002, we won 130 games * From 2000-2012, we won 126 games All as a member of the SEC. We lost our elite status and will have to work damned hard to get it back. It may take years. But we can look at the bright side. It COULD be worse. We could be... Miami: 96 wins Texas: 91 wins Nebraska: 85 wins Tennessee: 83 wins You don't think THEIR fan base isn't frothing at the mouth?
I think the love for all sports must be for or from alum. If it isn’t football, sometimes bb or bb, who gives a rats?! Go farther down the list and the rats get worse.
I have all the confidence in the world in BN. But a horrible reality just struck me. With all the transfers and new premiere talent coming in, it's gonna take a couple -few years for this to get sorted out. If it happens sooner. I'll be elated. Just sitting and watching... Prolly need a rocker for the porch. Just gonna need some relaxin and patience. It's great to-be a Florida Gator Go Gators.
The average college fan needs a lot more than a track championship to consider a program good. There are a lot of sports like you said, but other schools have success in them too. Oklahoma our new SEC squad destroys us sports wise these days. Probably the top overall program in the country right now Bama is pretty good across the board as well Multiple teams have had baseball success (Ole Miss, Miss St, and Vandy all have more recent titles) Georgias football dominance means a lot South Carolina is a beast in womens basketball. We aren’t bad by any stretch, but we aren’t even close to the class of the SEC. We are firmly in the middle to upper middle tier. No normal fan would think of us as an elite overall program compared to say OU or Bama I think a reasonable comp right now would be Arkansas
I disagree with you completely as it relates to sports. Sports are much more dynamic and volatile than academics. Smart will lose coaches, he will lose recruits in the portal, he will whiff on HS talent, and the balance in the SEC will shift as it always does. I think it provides a tremendous psychological edge. It is a confidence booster, and it sets the tone for expectations I HOPE for our graduates in the real world. I honestly believe that a person who can point to his or her school’s academic reputation will do either of two things- they will try to use it as a key to open doors or they will prove that it was warranted.
We were riding high with Meyer. He had great recruiting classes and we had talent. When he bailed on us, we had the opportunity to hire a great coach. Foley chose Chump which was our undoing. The spread that Meyer brought in was a cutting edge offense.. Coupled with a solid defense we had some great years. Foley hired Chump. Chump brought in Weis and tried to convert a team built for the spread to a team built for TOP and "Pro set" which ultimately was a disaster. This resulted in us having horrible offenses year in and year out, until Mullen came along. Most teams were evolving away from the "pro set", as can be seen by RPO's and running QB's throughout the college and pros now but Chump was a dinosaur and he wanted to take us back to leather helmets. Foley had some great hires but he single handily set us back to where we are now with Chump and then Mac. Mullen could have been the guy but he didn't want to recruit and he figured out he could be set for life if he was fired. So he didn't give a crap about our teams future and now is a very wealthy tv commentator.
UF has the most SEC trophies across all sports. No other team comes close. Yes, some sports are down at the moment but don’t kid yourself, we are still the premier athletic school in the conference and top 5 in the country.
He can go portal crazy and bring better talent right away. More than a few top coaches did it this year.
