NUMBERS OF NOTE +20The Gators have posted a +20 rebounding margin four times already this season, matching the most such performances by UF in a single season since doing so four times in 2011-12. 9Alex Condon’s nine offensive rebounds vs. Merrimack matched the most by any Gator this century, tying Dorian Finney-Smith, Will Yeguete and Al Horford. 4The Gators have used a different starting lineup in each of the last four games while navigating Micah Handlogten’s ankle injury. Zyon Pullin (shoulder) also came off the bench vs. Merrimack after taking a hard fall at Wake Forest
THE TIP-OFF• Florida makes its 23rd appearance in the Orange Bowl Classic, dating back to 1997. The Gators hold an 18-4 record in the event and visit Sunrise for the first time under second-year head coach Todd Golden. • The Gators hold a 3-2 record all-time vs. Richmond, winning each of the last two meetings. Richmond prevailed against Florida in the 2009 Orange Bowl Classic. • UF assistant coach Kevin Hovde was part of Chris Mooney’s first recruiting class at Richmond. Hovde appeared in 99 games over four seasons and played on the 2011 A-10 championship and NCAA Sweet 16 team. He returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach for the 2021-22 season before joining Todd Golden’s staff at UF. 2023-24 HIGHLIGHTS• Walter Clayton Jr. scored 21 of his 26 points vs. Merrimack in the second half. Freshman Alex Condon added his first career double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Condon’s 16 boards were the most by a Florida freshman since Al Horford’s 18 vs. Alabama during the 2004-05 season. • Florida came up just short against 13th-ranked Baylor in the NIT Season Tip-Off championship game as Riley Kugel exploded for 25 points and nine rebounds, both career highs. Tyrese Samuel and Zyon Pullin earned All-Tournament Team honors, and Samuel added SEC Player of the Week recognition. • The Gators topped Pitt in the first game of the NIT Season Tip-Off behind 28 points from Walter Clayton Jr. on 6-for-8 shooting from 3-point range, a 20-point, 10-rebound performance from Tyrese Samuel and a 24-to-8 assist-to-turnover showing as a team. • Florida blitzed Florida State, leading 27-5 before taking a 52-22 advantage into halftime. The Gators shot .643 and held the Seminoles to .258 from the field during the first half. Walter Clayton Jr. led UF with 19 points, while Zyon Pullin and Tyrese Samuel added 15 each and Thomas Haugh grabbed 10 rebounds. • Micah Handlogten (14 points, 14 rebounds) and Tyrese Samuel (10 points, 11 rebounds) both posted their first double-double as Gators in a hard-fought loss vs. Virginia in Charlotte.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT• Veteran coach Chris Mooney leads Richmond into his 19th campaign at the helm. He has led the Spiders to a pair of A-10 championships in 2011 and 2022 and three NCAA Tournament bids, including a 2011 Sweet 16 appearance. • Grad transfer guard Jordan King (ETSU) leads Richmond at 20.9 points per game, including a 34-point showing in the season opener vs. VMI and 29 vs. William & Mary. King shoots the 3 at a .455 clip, hitting 25 of 55 attempts this season. • Seven-footer Neal Quinn adds 13.8 points per game and leads the team in rebounding (6.2), assists (34) and blocked shots (14). Isaiah Bigelow also averages double figures at 10.8 points per game. • Grad transfer guard DeLonnie Hunt (Wagner) started, averaged 11.0 points and led the team in minutes through three games before suffering a fractured wrist Nov. 20 that will sideline him for 6-8 weeks. This should be a tune-up game. Get Richard's and maybe Kugel's head right and hopefully give Aberdeen and Rishwain a chance to make an impact on the team. And a chance to shoot FTs and make them...
Florida just needs to find a way to win. Wake Forest should have been a fairly easy win, but we played badly and got beat. Can't let that happen with inferior teams if we want to get a Top 25 ranking.
Despite a less than desirable start to the year, Vegas still has as around 25th best odds to win the national championship. So essentially a 6 seed. I’d take that in a heart beat.
That ended up not really being as bad of a loss as people made it out to be though. They were a really good team.
I'd start Condo instead of Haugh for this one. Really hope Handlogten can give 10+ minutes in this one to go up against their 7 foot senior.
Haugh's quickness, awareness and touch occasionally makes me think he might have the highest ceiling of all. Just a fantasy for now.
