Norvell Was 'Close' to Taking Bama Job; Kiffin Was Eyed by FSU

Do you guys think Norvelle fits the Bama coach “mold” ? I’m thinking of Bear, Stallings and Perkins n Saban all kind of rough and tough personas. Unless they are thinking, whomever follows, the legend is a stopgap. I just see Norvelle as kind of soft.

 

I agree. Kiffin is very good football coach and he would be tough competition for in-state recruits as well as making beating UF a priority every year.

Willing to bet Bama was not even interested. I think they were looking at Texas HC primarily or Smart and neither was open to leaving their situation. Bama cos h has had more collegiate success than Norvelle. Has only had one great year and got blown out by UGA in a Bowl game.

Agreed. Glad this didn’t happen. I hate to say it, but I want Kiffin to be in a position that we can lure him to come save us if this season goes poorly.

 

Base salary of $8.75 million and probably a buyout as well. It's a shame our AD committed so much financial obligation if it did not work out with Napier. Even if Kiffin wants the UF job, it's going to be extremely expensive. The point is, he has it made at Ole Miss.

 

It could be that Florida is no longer a destination job. I don’t know yet. What is certain is that Ole Miss is not and won’t be in the near future. No matter how well Kiffin coaches there, he will not bring in Top 10, never mind Top 5, classes. And he probably won’t ever do better than finishing third in the conference (now that being second in the SEC West is no longer a thing). He is going to have better offers coming, period. The only question is whether Florida would be a better offer if it becomes necessary to start looking again.

 

He did well through the portal. They have a chance to be really good this season. If he repeats last year's success he makes the play offs. I agree he would be a big step up from Napier and even at $10 million a year would have a better cost to win ratio. It just doesn't seem likely we could get him. Did not find what his buyout would be.

Same, sounds like a bunch of fluff to create a story, saying "they went right after their guy and got him" is a short dull story.

 

He should be near the top if not the top of the list imo should a new search is warranted.

I don’t believe any of this. This feels like a story Norvell’s agent floated out there in order to scalp the Nole’s bank account. And they fell for it.
