No more asphalt roofing shingles in Florida?

    It’s also way cheaper to replace the damages shingles rather than the whole roof, good luck finding a roofer to do that job.

    For my rental unit that’s all we have ever carried. General hazard about $1100/year was $600 a year until 3 years ago.
    Never bought windstorm, saved about $2500 a year for 17 years.

    I had to increase my hurricane deductible to $25k to be able to afford insurance for my small house at about $8k. And I have, over the years, invested $20-25k in hurricane windows, sliding glass doors, hurricane clips and attic reinforcement, yard drainage systems, etc.

    The one thing that should concern you with a hurricane is if you have any medium or large-size trees that could fall on your house. I got lucky 20 years ago with a 40' tree 15' from the house that fell in the only direction it could without damaging anything major. (Another thing to be especially aware of is two trees growing together at the bottom--they don't handle wind as well as a single tree.) I haven't allowed anything larger than a crepe myrtle near the house since then, and I cut those back every year.

    Cutting crepe Myrtles back every year is called crepe murder. lol
    That’s what my old neighbor used to tell me. She was in the Gainesville garden club.
