I thought this was going to about FSU. I just assumed they have already declared themselves 2024 National Champs. No bowl games needed guys!
I’m sorry, but what does that have to do with football? Kids shouldn’t be asked to play in a game to give a community a bowl game. I disagree with Herbstreit’s comparison of bowl games to the NIT, because the NIT is actually better than bowl games because at least it’s a tournament with a champion. Bowl games are obsolete and now will be a distraction from the playoff. If they want to keep the bowls, play them during the season when the games count.
I don’t think it will ever come to that. But then I never thought I would use a cell phone 20 years ago and now a cell phone is an attachment to my hand.
If somehow that happens and only playoff games are "Bowl" games, then why bother with conference championships? Do away with those too as they would be irrelevant for the most part.
Honestly, the non-playoff bowls have little future without spicing up the event. I would like to see non-playoff bowls set up some type of intra - league system where the major conferences non playoff contenders square off. I realize it is somewhat set up that way now but I think with a marketing plan and some embellishments, interest may be renewed. Obviously Bowls will never reach the previous heights and I do think the NIT comparison has some validity. The first thing that needs to be done is to re-tool the "opt-out" deal. I think fan interest will continue to deteriorate if teams continue to field totally different entities for bowl games. Perhaps an NIL incentive or penalty for playing / not playing may help the situation. Speaking only for myself, my motivation to absorb the expense of a bowl trip, to see third team guys I don't even know are on the roster, is a formula for me NOT to attend, unless the bowl just happens to be a short drive away. Call me a fair weather fan but when the bowls are diluted like that my interest level is pretty much - What to do? Spend 5 grand going to a bowl or watch a Mayberry RFD re-run. Hmmm - Opey was a cute little rascal back in the day................
hmmmmm.... Herbie farting his opinion on his mega platform, vs individual profit-loss/cost benefit analyses.... I'm gonna go out on a long thin limb here, and reckon the individual Bowl committees and sponsors will probably, as always, run their own numbers and make their own decisions. But I'm equally sure they also stop, ponder on the great and learned Dr. Professor Herbstreit's learned opinion, call a meeting to order, and upon due quorum, put the matter to a proper vote and proceed accordingly. As they surely do with all uttered opinions, I'm sure....
Bowls cut in half or maybe even 70%. And let's try to keep them at least a little regional so fans don't have to drive 18 hours to see their team play. The MAC, WAC and other schools play conference title games. There is no way their fan base will fill up a big boy stadium. Let their title games be bowl games.
Yeah, that was Rutgers' NC game. The whole thing is cynical enough already. I don't want to take that away from those kind of teams and their fans. If OSU fans don't like it, play better.
The bowls aren't about the teams. It's about tourism and bringing attention and money to the host city. The bowls don't want the locals driving in for the day then leaving.
Yes, which is why I’m not a fan of people getting upset with others having the audacity to discuss a topic.
