It's hard to believe that someone capable of putting together a $13M deal would then offer that to an unproven minor, a good but not even approaching 'can't miss' football player.
Yes. But I'm not sure how that's done legally. I think it would definitely help if these guys had to own their "number". If this is what they want, they deserve the added pressure that comes with it.
What impact would this have on the locker room? Imagine knowing what everyone was making? What if a performer who has been there 2 years is making less than someone who hasn't played a single down, how motivated are they? Do you know what everyone at your office makes? Could be a slippery slope. Don't really know a great way to handle it.
Do NFL players know what their fellow players are making? When I worked for the State, Gov. Scott had a website where you could see what every State employee made.
It happens every year in the pros A 6th rounder drafted 3 yrs prior but showed out and is in the 2 deep every week contributing than a 1st round rookie at his position gets drafted making 5-10x and is on the bench behind him. In every sport they know what each are making. NFL Active Player Contracts Most understand its a business or they learn real fast.
Understand what you are saying but at least that player was playing well in college to make the nfl. Kids from high school are #1 an unknown against better competition and #2 not as mature as someone 4+ years older that had the college experience and coaching.
Right now today under the current rules one of my businesses allows me to spend NIL money with UF students while also spending money with athletes from another school without some lunatic fan giving me a hard time about it. Make it public and it will have a chilling effect. Heitner is getting excoriated bc he has played a role in UM Nil deals. Does an athlete need to disclose $250 for showing up at a carwash or pizza place? Is there a repository for all of this *not affiliated with a school * transaction? Where stored? Who pays for that? What if there isn’t disclosure? Breach of data with for e.g. a 17 year old athlete? Should disclosure be made in some limited fashion? Hard to say but … I have friends and folks I know who further NIL for non football sports at colleges across the USA. They do so anonymously ( no real fanfare) bc they want to do it. That ends if made public. So if you want a real discourse instead of a 5 word post lets do that Should there be disclosure? Maybe on the part of sn athlete but..duration? amount? terms? termination? person or entity involved? If I want to pay an athlete to give a speech at a business breakfast does he have to disclose attendees?
Question tigator: when you give NIL money to students, who reports that to the IRS? Do you do it or is it the responsibility of the student?
Whoever is paying is obligated to provide a 1099 to the individual with a copy to the IRS if more than $600 annually.
