I hate to say this, but a nice chunk of Hillary's problem was that she was a woman. I hope I'm wrong.
I disagree. I think Hilary was just the wrong woman. Off putting personality and hard to look at. Oh her voice is repulsive. If Nikki Haley can get some momentum, look out. Listen to her, she’s really good.
Hard to look at…hard to listen to…nasty personality equals terrible candidate. Trump has exactly the same problems. People vote for likability in candidates. They just do.
It doesn't have to be a big chunk to matter in very close states. According to a 2019 Gallup poll, 94% of Americans said they'd be willing to vote for a woman to be president. I assume that means 6% percent would not, although these polls can be very tricky in practice. We do know that in 2016, six states were less than two point margin. Less Than Half in U.S. Would Vote for a Socialist for President https://www.usnews.com/news/the-run...14/the-10-closest-states-in-the-2016-election
I don’t think so. I think Hillary’s biggest problem is that she was so unlikable. While her husband oozes charisma, even if you don’t like him, Hillary repels charisma like it’s the plague.
I think both things can be true. I think, on net, women running for higher office are held to a different standard than men, whether it's a perceived personality flaw, their ambition, their personal life, etc. That's probably changing somewhat these days, and that doesn't mean a woman can't win. But we just had a thread on here yesterday talking about Taylor Swift and people shaming her for her dating life in her 20's. I have no doubt that a woman who'd had multiple divorces and kids by different fathers would have had a much tougher time than a male candidate like Trump. Hell, Bill Clinton was the dog who wouldn't stay on the porch, and many people got mad at Hillary for not leaving him and caring only about her career!
I’m just saying that I think voters didn’t like Hillary, not because she’s a woman, but because she’s unlikable to many voters. I wouldn’t think twice about voting for a woman or anyone else, if they were best for the job. And I think Haley is a far, far, far better choice than Trump or DeSantis (or any MAGA extremist).
Haley is a functioning mouthpiece of the warmongers. She can be ok if she is moderates on social and domestic issues. Hot take: I think there is a faction of the GOP who want a Trump win or a wonky turn-out to then say the 2017 election was rigged — things like results don’t statistically match. We’ll have years of people dissecting the turn out comparisons and claiming fraud back to 2017 or even 2024.
I think Hils was right pretty much about everything she said about trump and I do think there were those who would not vote for her because she was a woman. However big that factor was, it wasn’t the only one. Likeability matters so much and rightly or not she comes across as not that likeable. Still wish she had won. The country would be better off. Maybe charisma and personality shouldn’t matter as much as it does - DeSantis hopes that’s true.
