I'd call it a Southern spin on it.

Typical politician answer, trying not to bite the hand that feeds her. Tried not to piss anybody off, which almost never works.

Nonsense. The racists today hide their racism behind condescending pretenses of offering help. Because ya know, the lesser races need enlightened whitey's assistance.

IOW, contrary to the MSN characterization, she actually said it was about slavery, just without saying slavery.

(Apparently that needed to be simplified for *some*).

I feel like this point needs clarification.

Wars aren't typically fought over disagreements on procedure and process, but when people lose faith in their systems, procedures, and processes... that creates an environment where people tend to resort to violence to resolve their differences, including war.

But I'd still chalk up the cause to the substantive disagreement rather than a procedural disagreement. The American Revolution was about more than the Sugar Act or the Stamp Act. It was about a sense that colonists were being treated like subjects supporting the British Empire without the British Empire supporting them. The Civil War was about more than state's rights. It was about cultural differences, economic differences, and visionary differences that were all directly linked to the issue of slavery.

Well then, in that case, you've identified the biggest self-proclaimed racist in all of America.

She’s part of the contingent who hates discussing slavery, racism and the ugly parts of American history. Her behavior is par for the course.

Coming out of the debates, I viewed her as someone I could possibly vote for. But, to be unable/unwilling to give a basic, truthful answer to a well-known, really undebatable fact, is more than just a little unsettling.

Lol! That's WHY you were *instructed* to dislike her by your overlords via jedi mind trick. Don't bother reading what she actually said (Baza posted it upthread); you've received your thinking instructions.

To be clear, I'm not exactly a NH supporter. But the fact that this question was a pointless targetted gotcha is so transparent it's embarrassingly bush league.

...and lo n behold, here it is in da snowglobe, getting sincere play... LMAO!

I feel at times that maybe the left thinks and talks about race too much - then something like this reminds me why it’s still important.

Many Americans, particularly in the South, were taught alternate facts or cherry-picked facts about the Civil War, Jim Crow, etc. Haley took down a Confederate flag years ago as Governor, and I give her credit for that. I think the fact that she, in 2023, is having to tip-toe around our history so she doesn’t sound too “woke” is a good example of what is holding us back from moving forward.

Perhaps. But if a person knows something shameful of his or her ancestral past better to acknowledge it, at least to self. We are the sum of those who birthed and raised us, and do indeed bear the long lasting consequences of our ancestor's sins and offenses. If we discover our parental legacy is offensive, we may apprehend a portion of the offense likely was passed along in attitudes and speech, inherited by subsequent generations, just as was our hair and eye color. There are things we cannot escape, they must be recognized and dealt with.

Apologies are issued in words and often only meaningless gloss intended to placate and deflect from the greater necessity of healing discussion, and better yet - atoning actions for perpetuated sin. As to what this entails I leave to better minds than mine to determine.

As to the expectation this will occur. I have doubts at this time. Though glimmers of hope will ever remain, the seething evidence of resentful anger is too widespread.

Ahhh, the right's continuing obsession with sex.

(I think everyone understands why, it's patently obvious.)

And now we're back to the snowglobe silliness. I mean that hasn't gotten stale yet in the 5000 times you've used it. My standard reply:

Far better to view the world through a snowglobe than your current perspective.

"It's also to force her to choose between alienating some of the people who vote for her, and looking afraid to tell the truth."

Depending on the circumstances, sir, that's called doing the right thing....and that's the case here.

Nikki Haley, or in the finest MAGA tradition, Nimarata Nikki Randhawa Haley, has a history of appeasing neo-confederate racists in order to garner their support. Here are excerpts released from 2010 when she was selling her soul to get support from the Palmetto "Patriots" in her bid to run for governor of South Carolina.

For that fine group of white southern "gentlemen" she defined the Civil War as "tradition versus change."

She must have left her spine at home that day or she just struggles with the "S" word.

Well, even the candidates learn something new in political campaigns. She probably heard Rhonda Santos talk about slaves learning useful skills, and thought that slavery must have been kind of a vocational training program. What would that have to do with civil war?

Most politicians don’t know how to deal with trap questions. Most journalists and most Americans don’t know how to deal with nuanced answers.
