Pity, facts should be serious. From grade school, through college, I don’t remember reading anything like the citations I’ve posted or this …

The Crittenden-Johnson Resolutions on the Objects of the War, 1861

What I was taught was something more like saintly northerners sacrificing themselves by the hundreds of thousands for black strangers in the south (while digging up blacks in their own states so as not to taint white cemeteries and Lincoln running down fugitive slaves and shipping them back south).

This thread has been trolled. My suggestion is to ignore the trolls and make the TH experience much more pleasant for yourself. Just my two cents.

Is there anyone on this board who feel that they were unfairly ambushed by a mean ole gotcha question if they were asked the cause of the civil war?

I haven't followed this thread but I will tell you what I have done. I have researched the US Census reports of most of my West Virginia & North Carolina ancestors & some of my Florida ancestors and can tell you one thing. All of them that I am aware of fought for the Confederacy, none of the censuses I have read shows any of them as slave owners. I have seen most of the census reports going back to 1840 with the exception of the 1890 census which was destroyed by fire in DC.

That is a strange fact to introduce, considering we are not vilifying each individual Confederate Soldier in this thread. We are talking about the reason for the Civil War, not whether each soldier was a slave owner.

BTW, I likely have ancestors who were slave owners, as do many other blacks who have mixed race ancestry.

The way I think about that is that I would not go to war so my neighbor could keep slaves or some guy across town could keep his slaves. I can believe there were some cases where folks signed up because their brother or a best friend was a slave owner.

The elites owned more property, and thus rationally owned larger #’s of slaves.

I’d bet the vast majority of the high ranking officers and confederate leadership owned slaves or were tied to the larger slave owning plantations.

For the rank and file confederate soldier apparently around 25% owned slaves. But this hardly means 75% weren’t fighting to uphold slavery, a poor white would have still benefitted from slavery and would have wanted to maintain their social station. At the very least they were being paid by or following the orders of those who had stakes in maintaining slavery.

Again though, I ask: WHY the hell are we talking about WHY the North and South went to war over 150 years ago???

    "CW denialism"? LMAO!

...it's only hot on the left, as a desperate distraction from their epic shitting in their pants, mucking up of today's actual issues.

"...hey, remember when we kicked y'all's ass back in the 1960's? Let's talk about that...".

    LOL!

Yeah...campaign on the cause of the CW--it's all the Dem's got.

It’s a perfectly legitimate question. I get asked it almost every day. It’s like, “Hello, how about this weather ?” followed by “What was the cause of slavery ?”

Think of the slave owners as the “1%” of their day.

Not all blacks in the South were slaves. In the Upper South, about 10% of the worked as laborers or tradesmen.

In the Deep South, about 2% of them were free, but they were wealthy and owned slaves themselves.

Nikki Haley was clearly startled by the question. It was a startling question. But she answered correctly. The average Confederate soldier saw himself as fighting for freedom against an overbearing government in the north …

Where she screwed up is apologizing to the mob. NEVER apologize to the mob.

Pretty brilliant question actually to figure out how far she'll go to avoid upsetting the fringe element of her party. If she's afraid to say the right thing in a low stakes setting, will she be willing to say or do the right thing when it really matters? This is a strike against her character.
