Good piece. Lots of good stuff beyond 4 paragraphs

The original patriots come from the American Revolution, most often associated with figures such as Sam Adams and Benjamin Franklin. But enslaved people who advocated for abolition and members of native communities trying to recover or retain their sovereignty also saw themselves as patriots, said Nathaniel Sheidley, president and CEO of Revolutionary Spaces in Boston. The group runs the Old State House and Old South Meeting House, which played central roles in the revolution.

They took part in the American Revolution. There were working people advocating for their voices to be heard in the political process,” Sheidley said.

One example is the white supremacist militia group Patriot Front, which researchers say uses patriotism as a sort of camouflage to hide racist and bigoted values. Some white nationalist groups may genuinely view themselves as pushing back against tyranny — even if in reality they are “very selective” about what parts of the Constitution they want to defend, Braddock said.

Gaines Foster, a historian at Louisiana State University, said patriotism at one point was seen as a civic nationalism that held the belief “that you’re an American because you believe in democracy, you believe in equality, you believe in opportunity. In other words, you believe certain things about the way the government works, and that’s a very inclusive vision.”

Do we not live in America? HOA's make all kinds of ridiculous rules. I didn't know that flying a flag was political???? I thought it was a showing that even with all our warts and past sins we are still the greatest country on earth. Whether you have a D or R after your name being proud of the country you live in is not political.

Shouldnt a "1776" community fly the original flag of that year? The one with 50 states is anachronistic, they cant even get it right.

And were okay with a president and a group of thugs trying to overturn a valid election. They have disgraced the flag and have no idea what it stands for.

The message. But there shouldn't be a problem with this particular message; the problem is with compelling it/projecting it upon all of the members of the community.

I think you are failing to recognize the deeper symbolic meaning and cultural significance associated with the flag. Equating it to a simple decoration choice oversimplifies the issue. Consider this: from a distance, a community where all houses proudly display the US Flag would likely be characterized a certain way (and strongly). On the other hand, a community with beige houses and black trim may not serve to convey any sort of identity. The display of the flag holds a unique significance that goes beyond mere aesthetics.

This thread reminds me of the time me and the wife went to Palatka for a festival. A lot of bikers wearing their colors showed up. One rather scroungy looking biker had a shirt on the said something like “A Harley and leather jacket doesn’t make you a biker. Lol

I have no issue with it as long as the rules are there from the beginning and owners know before they buy.

I like knowing peoples views, beliefs, etc. That way I can avoid them if I so choose. I would stay away from that neighborhood and people. What they do in their subdivision is their business as long as they aren’t breaking any laws.

I think it also cheapens the patriotic sentiment expressed by people when they aren’t compelled to put up a flag to make the exact same expression. Real patriots in that development are going to have to put up even more flags and flagpoles in their yard.

The one exception I nearly made, and call me partisan, was ordering a hat for DDG 56 - USS John McCain, named after 3 generations of decorated Navy men, because I was so offended that you know who demanded that the destroyer be hidden so he didn't have to see it because of the name. Didn't order the hat in the end

That’s one thing that really bothered me about you know who. Someone who suffered for his country like McCain did should never be ridiculed. You can disagree with his politics, but you can never call into question his service.

This thread reminded me of an insert I got in a MAD magazine in high school. It was the Pledge of Allegiance written as the stripes on the American flag. I would post a picture of it here, however, it might get me banned. If interested, google Mad Magazine The MAD Flag.

I didnt say he did. I'm saying it isnt any sort of speech violation unless the government is the one doing it.

What a weak take. This is so well explained by Jase from Duck Dynasty. You really would do well to lighten up and enjoy life like him lol…

The racist bigot? Yeah, I will "lighten up" alright. Maybe I can call you and we can go plan a cross burning with the ignorant swamp-Dynasty trash? Unless that is not the "lighten up" you were referring to with these idiots??

Yep…you are still as tight as it gets lol.

Since you can’t take a little humor from a TV show (and you are clearly ignorant about the people in it) to show how dumb your take is. I will explain it for you.

People can make the decision to not live in the community. If they do not like the contractual guidelines by the homeowners association...then they can buy in different community.

We deal with a homeowners association in Ocala. And thankfully do not in Palm Coast. But the people know what they are signing up for when they buy a house in that community. So spare us your idiotic 1939 Germany (Hitler) nonsense.

What is your point here? I never accused him of saying anything.
