I wonder how much these hostages will cost us. Schumer is not going to let us leave Jewish Americans captured in Israel to their fate, even if they were supporting an “apartheid state.”

    Meh.

And how exactly would having an ambassador in Israel help the situation right now? More specifically, what would Jack Lew be doing right now that we just can’t live without?

Biden secured the release of five Americans in exchange for the released to Iran by South Korea of Iran’s own money. I am fine with that. Trump pulled out of the nuclear deal with Iran. I am not fine with that.

$6B should have been released even independent of hostages. We only hurt ourselves grabbing it. We overuse financial sanctions through our banking system at our long term peril. Trump Administration through idiot Jared was so idiotic they even used secondary sanctions against European allies. Dan Drezner has written at length on the issue. Best to understand the issue, though very few Americans do.

So you’re asserting our federal government has only ever seized cash that was from ill-gotten means? They’ve never seized assets from criminals that were derived from legitimate services or products? Considering that criminals routinely launder their ill-gotten means with legitimate business fronts, that’s a hysterical argument to make. Because if the government had to prove that every last cent they seize was from ill-gotten means, they’d never be able to seize much, if anything, at all. These are the types of stupid arguments you make when you begin trying to rationalize handing over $6 billion to the world’s most notorious terrorist regime. And it’s not like we just gave them the $6 billion because it was the “right thing to do.” It was conditional (albeit fecklessly) and required release of hostages. So quit trying to make the “we had to give Iran their oil money, because it was rightfully theirs” argument. Not even Joe Biden is making that argument.

I get it. You’re all for excusing, equivocating, distorting, and misdirecting. That’s honest. And that might even work with some of the people you need it to work with. I hope the Administration does otherwise, but I’m not optimistic, of course.

Trump "did nothing wrong"! How many times does he have to say it? About anything and everything under the sun. I don't remember his exact words, but I'm sure he said something like the nuclear deal with Iran was the worst deal in the recorded history of mankind. Pulling out of it was the "perfect" thing to do, as one would expect from a perfect human being.

Now I'm waiting for Trump to say that if he is elected president in 2024, he will end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in 24 hours.

Bebe will get a lot of blame for the intelligence failure. Israel’s intelligence capabilities have weakened entirely on his watch.

Getting frequent texts from my brother about what’s going on and why. He’s still in touch with a lot of his former colleagues from SF, intelligence and the state dept. He wasn’t a bit surprised by all this.

I just did the math on Israel’s fatality count (about 600 presently). As a proportion of its Jewish population, 27,000+ Americans would have to be dead to feel the sting Israel has experienced in the past 24 hours.

With the amount of money we and other Western allies spend on intelligence, we are blind to an incredible degree.

“DUBAI—Iranian security officials helped plan Hamas’s Saturday surprise attack on Israel and gave the green light for the assault at a meeting in Beirut last Monday, according to senior members of Hamas and Hezbollah, another Iran-backed militant group.”

“U.S. officials say they haven’t seen evidence of Tehran’s involvement. In an interview with CNN that aired Sunday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said: “We have not yet seen evidence that Iran directed or was behind this particular attack, but there is certainly a long relationship.”

It's great story although completely unsupported by actual facts. If a terrorist organization wanted to infiltrate terrorists in the US it would be be much more logical to send them to US legally as tourists, students or under temporary work permits than to try to infiltrate them through illegal entry at the Southern border. The 9-11 terrorists had all entered the US legally and most of the other Islamic terrorists were either US citizens, immigrants with green cards or in one case an immigrant who entered the US legally under a fiance visa. Even assuming that a terrorist wanted to enter the US illegally it would make much more sense to do so through the much less secure Canadian border than by crossing at the Southern border.

Anyone have access to WSJ on this? Curious whether it says Iranian government or just IRGC. Also, really curious on description of sourcing for this. Given the surprise, no Western intel service would have this to give to WSZj, or at least I wouldn’t think so. Curious if it seems credible. Sounds like IRGC bragging for internal and regional purposes, but would WSJ have that?

I’m sure someone does. I don’t. Not including the Arabs, Israel has a small minority of Druse, Maronite, Coptic, etc. Were some of them killed? Probably. But the 600+ figure cited is overwhelmingly Jewish, and that is who Hamas was targeting, so my assessment of proportionality is based on the Jewish population of roughly 7.2M.

    i can translate that video.

“We are launching non precision rockets indiscriminately at civilians in Israel “. “These rockets have almost no strategic value and anything they hit is most likely civilian”
