This seemed to go unnoticed here on Too Hot....strange I know.

I guess Spotify didn't make such a big mistake afterall by sticking with Joe Rogan.

There's obviously a bigger demand for Joe Rogan and his "misinformation" than Neil Young.

Neil Young begrudgingly returns to Spotify | Fortune

    From the article:

"Neil Young is returning to Spotify after a two-year absence—but he doesn’t seem especially happy about it.

The folk-rock legend, best known for songs like “Heart of Gold” and “Old Man,” announced his return Tuesday, conceding that his protest of the service, which centered around what he called the spread of vaccine misinformation on Joe Rogan’s podcast, had been unsuccessful. And the expansion of Rogan’s program to other streaming platforms made it impossible to continue."

People are pushing this story all over the place, all Rogan fans I guess.

Since Neil Young hasn't been culturally relevant for decades, I don't really understand why anyone would care about this other than Rogan fanboys.

I'm also a fan of people getting paid for their labor and creativity, and definitely not corporations exploiting people because they simply control distribution.

Neil Young ain't hurting for money. The developers of Spotify also put in labor and creativity. Seems like your preference is simply for the artist to get paid instead of the suits.

Definitely not, but he's still a person that has to sell his labor to other people to make money, Spotify isnt doing anything other than buying licensing for pennies on the dollar with their financial leverage and by virtue of being one of a handful of streaming platforms. Same could be said of athletes or actors, I'm definitely going to side with them over management and studios, even if many of them arent going to starve on the street playing pro sports/acting.

Or, Spotify offers an artist exposure so they can sell more merchandise and tickets on tour. Almost every band I've seen in the last two years was a small band I discovered on Spotify that I probably would have never found otherwise. Obviously Neil doesn't need to be discovered.

Neil obviously feels it in his best interest to be on Spotify, and he's not hurting for the pennies, so there must be another reason he went back.

Well, that's why artists sign on, because how else are people going to hear their music? Doesnt change the fact that Spotify and the streaming services have them over a barrel. Does Neil Young need exposure? I suppose he had the security to boycott for a few years, but even legacy artists have found that they need to take their crummy deal to have their music heard, because its the only game in town. Even if you own your catalogue, if no one has the ability to listen to it, its value is vastly diminished.

So ultimately sounds like the consumers decided they liked what Spotify offered. Because there used to be plenty of other steaming options that have dwindled. Spotify has the musicians over a barrel because they have the customer base. Same way the labels used to have the musicians over a barrel. They're all making plenty of money, so this isn't your standard labor/capital discussion. They're all fine.

Free music? Unlimited consumption? Yeah, no wonder people liked that lol. I'm not sure Spotify had much to do with creating the conditions from which they've profited though.

    Radio has always been free.

I mean, there's inherent value in distribution and logistics. That's why companies make millions from it and artists don't. If Neil Young had the means he would.

Yes, radio was free, perhaps you remember the payola scandals involved with radio play. That was when radio play drove record sales to a much greater extent than now, but labels can still pay Spotify to promote their songs (without violating any law). The economics of the business has always been that the people that control mass broadcasting have enormous influence on the market.

Who is Joe Rogan and why does Neil Young not like him? Is it because Neil is Canadian? The only Joe Rogan I can recall is from that fear factor show where you have to eat roach intestines while being thrown off a moving truck. Same one?

Wasn't it Limp Bizkit's management that was known to show up to radio stations with bags of cocaine to bribe the DJs and management to play their shit?
