I saw an interesting tweet last evening (h/t @tampagtr for posting it earlier today as well).

This sent me to search out the initial theory. Here is the initial paper, and it does have some very interesting explanations for the persistence of Trumpism:

The “Need for Chaos” and Motivations to Share Hostile Political Rumors | American Political Science Review | Cambridge Core

Here is a good summary of findings from their conclusion:

I do think that there is good evidence to suggest that the increase of college education over time (along with its resulting social status), the spread of social media (which exposes people to those that they feel have higher social status through expertise (i.e., experts on topics that might know more than they do)), and changes to racial and gender hierarchies has led a group of aging white men without college degrees but who have above average incomes to perceive a big status threat. And, due to a low reluctance to attack the system due to a lack of historical discrimination against them (which tempers the reaction to this concept in other racial and gender groups), you end up with Trumpism and January 6.

There is a lot of initial logic to it, subject to further consideration

Interesting. Without reading it, you turned the argument against political elites. Do you feel that you receive the social status that you deserve?

I know my social credit must be low, what with me yammering about crimes against humanity based on fictitious pathogens, partisan derangement, historical fables and such.

I think his post was very generic and did not deserve your sarcastic reply.

BTW, I agree with him totally. I do not need or want any more social status than I already have. Fact is, I would enjoy more than a little bit less.

The Internet age, global trade and the destruction of the American blue collar career industries is a gaping wound that has not been treated in this country.

Trumpism is a fungal infection caused by that wound.

Cool. Let's assume one can accurately measure "social resentment," and that this paper and thesis are accurate. What next?

Seems to me the only answer to that question is to dismiss the Trumpists, or worse, destroy them.

I know, I know, let's just wait till the Boomers die off, and Gen X starts to wither, then millennials on down will usher in the glory of the single party (D) state that has been promised since the mid 90s. Problem solved!

It is interesting though, the blue collar jobs were not sold out by 5he gubmitt, where the anger is directed. But by the corporation in search of shareholder dividends. One could argue that the source of much wealth, the market and the “free” market, also caused the destruction of blue collar jobs with a smattering of Union greed.

Poor Ross P is rolling n his grave at the suckage.

    or not, ymmv

Any evidence backing up that absurd statement?? The only evidence I've seen is red states trying to rig voting so that they become the only party.

The non college educated aspect of Trumpism is somewhat exaggerated. There is plenty of college educated support for Trump

How College-Educated Republicans Learned to Love Trump Again

I can’t really decide if the OP is insightful or it is just a more intellligent sounding summarization of things we generally already know.

I think there are a lot of reasons why Trump supporters don’t like Democrats or elites. It is different for different people. For non college educated it is a lack of perceived status. Same for religious voters, but for different reasons. For more conservative college educated it could be economic and an aversion to taxes or regulation of their businesses. But bottom line most of them seeking affirmation of their views go to Fox News or other outlets which present a different reality and appeal to their preferred identity.

and what’s ironic is that the Republican Party was front and center in regards to offshoring on behalf of corporations leading up to Trumpism.

And now, instead of looking internally, they’ve focused the blame on everything but the cause.

I would also think this intertwines with shifting demographics in favor of minorities.

What the MAGA movement essentially wants is to give themselves special privilege to shield themselves from the negative consequences of the free market and social change, but since that won’t happen, they will settle for feeling better about themselves through victimhood and retaining political power at all costs.

And deregulation. Even today, the Republican political actors that wear robes are looking to end Chevron deference.

And areas ravaged by opioids vote MORE Republican - Places ravaged by opioids are giving Republicans the upper hand

But the true core is best revealed in a recent poll

Poll: Republicans want revenge, fear Biden will sell out whites

In the latest CBS/YouGov poll, Republicans were asked: If Trump wins, do you want him to take revenge against his enemies? No shilly shallying, no euphemisms. Do you want him to take revenge? Nearly half said yes:

Another question drilled down to Republicans' most primal fears: will Joe Biden sell out white people? An astonishing 61% said yes:

It has become distressingly common on the right to blame any sort of inefficiency or problem on "DEI hires" or a "diversity workforce." This didn't come out of nowhere. It came from Republican leaders complaining about DEI in corporations, affirmative action in universities, and wokeness sapping the strength of the US military. Claudine Gay was a diversity hire who never deserved to be president of Harvard. Trans-tolerant policies are ruining military preparedness. Airport delays are due not to the weather, but to a diverse—i.e., too Black—workforce.

Racial progress in America has never been steady. White backlash lurks around every corner, and we're going through a phase of that now. But it's certainly dispiriting that this time around it's being led so explicitly from above.
