We do have an unhealthy obsession with guns, too much machismo and your not the boss of me paranoia. But the vast, vast majority of gun owners are responsible. Rhetoric, peppers and government takeover oh my. I can remember “militia” types at the rural ranges in the early 90’s.

We also have a horrible mental health system. Homeless any one. Failure to talk about it so that no one is offended. Just like obesity. Family in this case just said he had been dealing with mental health issues. Oh really. Shocking.

We have also, by various means, devalued life. I hear more and more younger adults saying stuff like “I’d be okay with dying” (or being dead) as sort of a casual mention in conversation. Not that I think these individuals are suicidal, but they just don’t have a healthy appreciation for their life in general. These are people who are perfectly physically healthy people. And I think most any mass shooter has developed a deep sense of “life is valueless, so what I’m about to do doesn’t feel wrong.“ That sort of thing. It’s just one example. There are many other ways we have manifested the devaluation of life in our society and our younger generations are picking that up and running with it as younger folks tend to do with a lot of things.

You would think, and some do, that persons capable of such horrendous acts would be easy to identify- like they were wearing a big blinking sign. But they usually aren’t much different outwardly than other depressed, disaffected folks. Somewhat like the Plinko arcade game where you drop a disk into a slot but in its trip downward bounces around and never ends up in the same place - maybe the same with these mental conditions. Some with a condition will sit at home and play with action figures in their own little world in the basement while someone else with the same condition (nice guy, kept to himself, never saw this coming) will pick up a gun.

BCG, I know you meant this sarcastically, but I wonder what would happen if every single person in this country got on their knees and fervently prayed for these senseless shootings to stop. I have to think we might actually see some change.

This thread reminded me of something I attended back in the 90s. There was a public meeting at our local high school for parents to give their ideas on what the education should look like for their children. They had us sitting 8 to 10 parents at a table.

The moderator asked us what subjects do we think should be taught. They were the usual STEM answers, with couple throwing out music and art. I said that I thought ethics should be taught. A couple people immediately jumped on me saying that sounds like religion, and keep that stuff out of schools.

Honestly, I was not thinking of religion. I was thinking about teaching children what it means to live ethically in a civilized society. What it means to respect others, and what it means to do no harm. But the table wanted nothing about that.

A couple months later the Columbine shootings happened.

You don't think who they are praying to already knows that these things need to stop? And if he/she/it had power to stop it, why hasn't it happened already? A mind-reading being just needs to see people literally get on their knees and ask for it? Sounds like that being is A) dumb, B) narcissistic, or C) non-existent.

It’s interesting that the three options you give are all negative towards God, and appear to be crafted to support an atheist viewpoint. But it’s a false trilemma. There are other options.

You did not take into account the freewill God has given mankind to direct the world as we want it, for better or worse. God will intervene when we in faith ask him to, or when he needs to direct his overall plan.

There is another aspect to prayer. When we fervently pray it changes us. It’s unlikely that you could get on your knees and pray fervently to end violence, and then get up and go shoot someone. The Bible says in James 5:16b: “The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.”

So is there freewill or not? If it's somewhere in the middle, then it's not freewill. If a person is going to shoot up a place, and God stopped it, then that person's freewill is nullified. Sure was a lot of freewill that wasn't nullified at Aushwitz, Dachua, etc. Or maybe that 6,000,000 was part of the plan.

Maybe they are following in God's footsteps.. he was pretty murderous himself. He killed 70,000 people in Israel because David ordered a censuses. Didn't he order the destruction of 70 cities and the killing of every man, woman, and child in those cities? Didn't he have the Cannanites slaughtered, all men and women, young and old, ox, sheep, etc? Had everyone killed in Jabesh-gilead except for 400 virgins. Convenient. All the worshippers in the Temple of Baal. He killed every man, woman, and child on the planet except a family of 600-year-old folks who assumably repopulated the earth via incest.

God let 6 million go to the gas chamber or the firing line, but if we get on our knees and ask really, really nicely, he's going to stop mass shootings in the United States that kill far, far fewer people?

    Nope, not buying it.

so the politicians agree that strict gun laws are required to protect them, but not others...

some animals are more equal than others....smdh

Police seize assault rifle from truck headed toward Capitol Hill (msn.com)

"Just after 5:00 a.m, a USCP screening team spotted the gun, which was partially wrapped in a blanket in the back seat of a large Ford pick-up truck. The rifle was confiscated at an off-site delivery facility where the Department inspects delivery vehicles before they get to Capitol Grounds," said police in a statement. "Although our investigators are still looking into this case, at this time, there is no evidence that shows this person was targeting the Congress or the Capitol Complex."

USCP noted in the statement that. last year alone, 40 guns were confiscated on or near the Capitol Grounds.

"Even if you have a gun that is legally registered in another state, it is still illegal to bring it on Capitol Grounds, which includes screening facilities like the one from this morning," the police note.

Washington, D.C. has some of the nation's strictest gun laws, and the prohibition is especially strict around the Capitol Complex to protect the safety of lawmakers.

Maybe should just take the guns from the liberals!!! The last 2 mass shooting were by anti-conservative liberals.
90% of all gun deaths are by liberals.
Don't believe it look it up!!

Where on earth did you see that 90% figure? I don't see any readily available breakdown by political affiliation, and given that red states dominate the list of states with the highest gun death rates, that just defies logic.

Look a little deeper into the numbers than just red states. Maybe make an assumption of the voting records of certain demographics and races and you might think a little different.

And yet the murder rate in Washington, D.C., is 23.52 per 100,000. Good for 13th highest murder rate among major cities in the United States.

We have definitely gone off topic from the thread, but I do feel compelled to respond to some of these thoughts.

You seem to be saying that a person only has freewill if they are able to do everything they want. I would say freewill is the ability to determine what you intend to do. If someone interrupts your intention, that doesn’t mean you didn’t have freewill. The Louisville bank shooter determined by his own freewill to go into the bank and kill people, but his intention was interrupted by the police officer who put him down.

Regarding the killings in the Old Testament, you seem to be making the assumption that those people were innocent or didn’t deserve that fate. God is not capricious in his actions. He didn’t wake up in the morning and say, “Who can I destroy today for kicks.” The Bible tells us God held off on judgment until the iniquity of the Canaanites became complete. Their immoral behavior had reached such an extent that it warranted destruction.

Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of how horrible that society was. One site excavated in the early 20th century showed an altar with victims of sacrifices all around it. They found the body of a young girl sawed in half, along with the decapitated heads of young girls. Numerous buried urns were scattered around the site containing the burned bones of babies that have been sacrificed. The Canaanites were not a team whose jersey you want to wear.

It’s interesting that you blame God for exercising judgment on the Canaanites, but then also blame God for not exercising judgment on the Nazis sooner.

I noticed that the Liberals here have no compunction about slamming people's 1rst Amendment rights, with all this phony outrage about everything from pronouns to their ever present cancel-couture of "obedience" ...to what they say is acceptable language. And we all know that if we give you an inch you will take it all... that is all of our Constitutional rights from us.

This is why talking about controlling any part of just one of our Constitutional rights (especially our 2nd Amendment Rights) is a complete non-starter.

Name a right the Pubs took away from you. The "right" to murder unborn children? They "right" to emotionally abuse then with all this phony gender bender BS?

Name one Constitutional Right that the Pubs have taken from you.
