I was watching the replay of LSU- Mizzou and Drinks offense looks a LOT like Billy’s. Bunch sets, lots of motion, eye candy, 3 wide most of the time… their offensive stats are remarkably similar to ours with a few exceptions…Cook is averaging around 10 yards a pass where Mertz is close to 8. It gives me a little hope that this scheme can work if you take shots and look vertical a little more often. I know it’s been mentioned Mertz is missing some open dudes down field and our woes are more about that and oline issues than scheme… Watching Mizzou gave me a little more belief in that.
The pass offense could use some infusion of ideas. But the scheme is not bad…we complained that Meyers offense didn’t run the ball well with a RB. Napiers scheme is good in that phase. The problem seems to be getting that right balance of pass (deep, shallow, dumps) and run game. I think a good OL shows the scheme in a new light..I mean we had 500 yards yesterday and little more if the OL could hold up better
On the OL, that was basically the 2nd team group out there... They did well. CBN has shown he can build an OL.
I’m beginning to think that notwithstanding his positive attributes, Mertz is the limiting factor in Billy not going downfield more often. I thought Spurrier’s remarks alone - never mind Vandy being a cupcake - would have had us airing it out a bit.
He cannot air it like AR did at times last year. But there are plenty of QBs with limited physical capabilities that aired it downfield plenty. Example: Danny Wuerffel.
Of course he is one of the factors. It’s a combination of him, OoL not giving time and receivers still trying to learn except for pearsall. I think the scheme is an issue. By this I mean, the route trees are well established concepts, but how you coach them to the QB and WR is the trick. The best OCs can simplify that and get WRs open that tge QB can just throw the ball on that region and get a completion. Billy’s scheme requires a high quality talent win one on one match ups, not always possible.
Odd as it may sound, I think his accuracy might be the limitation, his otherworldly completion percentage owing much to screen passes and passes under ten yards.
Going to add more fuel for discussion. Drinkwitz called his own plays last year. They were crap. This year he handed it over to Kirby Moore. They are much better.
Boardingham and Wilson provide more weapons for the offense. A little more talent makes all the difference. Speed also important
Yes, as much a I like Pearsall, there isn't one receiver on this team I would take over any of those three.
It could be worse. He could have suggested Drink as our new savior, like he did Louisville's coach in an earlier thread today.
Mertz looks pretty good on short passes. The longer routes going deep take too much time. He has to scramble to buy time to get someone open. To me it seems that with the defense up close to the line of scrimmage with eight men usually, the routes going long should leave a second receiver open if they are near each other and force the dbs to choose their poison. A lot of times you see just one receiver going long in an area. I think crossing patterns would open some of these and a second receiver sometimes running together and breaking different ways at least twenty yards down field. CBN and CGonzales I am sure could work on these longer throws and Mertz could be more successful and open up the running game more. Each part of the scheme needs the other to be successful to move the ball consistently. Yesterday was better and I am complimenting the offense and coaches. Hopefully we can get a better scheme for the route running to get our talented receivers the ball. Vandy will be last in the east so we have to keep working on the passing game to beat the better teams in the SEC which there is no ducking now, our schedule is unbelievable. We don’t get breaks on scheduling every tough team in the south. FSU is killing their schedule, Miami was, Missouri is tough, add Georgia, LSU, SC on the road, Arkansas looks to be tough. We are staring at murderer’s row, four on the road. we are going to have to beat some of these guys to have a winning record. Our history on the road this last year and a half is not good. Here, cheers, to getting better on the passing game quick!
I think I’m seeing that too. Mertz hits the missed opportunities and our line being able to block legit front sevens, a real te threat….. get the horses and it could be fine. It’s easier to call plays when they work.
Downfield shots are missing but as I said in game thread, I’m not sure Mertz is capable to make those with regularity. To me it looks like a timing thing with him. Unfortunately we have no idea what happens in practice, so I won’t necessarily bash CBN for the dink and dunk offense.
I do wonder why we don’t challenge the middle of the field with the short to intermediate passing more often, since going downfield is proving to be difficult
What drum? The “Missouri’s offense is working and looks a little like ours” drum. Not sure what you’re referring to. Little drummer boy? Who’s writing your jokes?
"Y'know, I can make a delicious soup with only a stone. But if you happen to have spices, vegetables, meat and some cream to add to it, my stone soup could taste even BETTER!" Yes, Danny had limited skills. He also had a far better OL, great RBs, a solid TE, and Ike, Reidel, and Quezzie (along with Doering and some others) catching the balls...
