Makes as much sense as the Trump/Republican massive tax cut of 2017 when the economy was heading for a near record unemployment rate. Waiting for a rating of "off-topic" although it's a perfectly valid analogy.

First, seems more like a dividend than a stimulus...and secondly...

For all the shit we or anyone says about Cali--this is cool. On at least 2 levels--1st, they ran a surplus? Outstanding! Kudos to Cali!

...and doubly cool that they refunded overage to the tax base, rather than figuring out how to spend more effectively so as not to have a surplus.

I would like to think that if there be common ground between the great schism that divides us, it would be in the elusive concept of fiscal responsibility--which this would appear to be an example of.

    Hats off to Cali here.

When the voters are really pissed, cry on camera and give away some free money. Works every time.

    Well this didn't age well

California faces budget deficit despite nearly $100 billion surplus last fiscal year

California will likely face a $25 billion budget deficit next year driven by high inflation and the threat of a recession, despite lofty projections in May that forecast a surplus of nearly $100 billion for the current fiscal year.

My question is how much in taxes people paid to get that $1,000? Seems like a trivial amount when you consider most Californians pay 20 times that in stupid taxes and fees.

Aged just fine. Your article says if there is a recession income will contract. No shit. It also says :

“ The good news is that as we prepare to close a budget shortfall, the state is in its best-ever position to manage a downturn, by having built strong reserves and focusing on one-time commitments“

Finally… not everyone thinks a recession is likely. Goldman Sachs says no way we go into recession.
