As I stated earlier, I like a lot of what the bill offers and I'm not sure we could anything more passed by either house. My biggest concern is the discretion to enforce any of the limits is placed "solely" in the hands of the secretary. If implementing the limits was at the discretion of the CBP you may have something then.
Wall Street Journal “Do Republicans want to better secure the U.S. border, or do they want to keep what has become an open sore festering for another year as an election issue? ……we’ll soon learn what the GOP really wants. By any honest reckoning, this is the most restrictive migrant legislation in decades. Previous immigration talks have involved trading security measures for legalizing more immigration. There is little of the latter in this bill—nothing for nearly all of the Dreamers who were brought here illegally as children, no general pathway to citizenship or green cards for most illegal immigrants already in the U.S.” https://www.wsj.com/articles/senate...migration-biden-border-patrol-asylum-bc2f9543
I could be wrong and maybe it was prevalent, but I at least do not recall hearing the "we don't need additional legislation" argument until fairly recently. Would that remain the Republican position if Trump wins? Or would we likely see a shift with calls for Congress to pass legislation so that Trump can sign it. I know I have my guess.
Funny. They didn't include the spike in 2019? I wonder why? They also didn't include the decrease in foreign aid to many C. and S. American countries that ended under Trump either. Selective memory?
I haven't seen you calling for Biden to reinstate stay in Mexico to asylum seekers? Why not? That would have a huge impact on the number of people trying to cross the border.
6 fold increase since 2020 and this is the reply lol. Biden could fix this today but doesn't want to. Neither do R's. Both sides are full of crap and playing politics. Nothing more, nothing less. Anyone thinking one side is "right" is either an idiot or woefully ignorant.
Again, why ignore 2019? 2020 was the COVID year. But look at 2019, and it was a lot closer to 2021 than it was 2020. And if you amortize 2021 with 2020, both years look a lot like 2019.
Hmmm... if you want to amortize, why are you not including 22 and 23? Oh, doesn't fit the narrative, the same thing you are blaming on them.
2020 was the COVID year. Immigrants not leaving their country during a global pandemic, plus Title 42 and remain in Mexico saw 2020 numbers drop to the lowest level this century. Add in 2020 with 2021, and it's actually, on average, lower than 2019. Again, the COVID effect. Not going to argue the rise in 2022 and 2023. It's obvious. But it's not like Trump stopped anyone in 2019. And taking a guess, had the pandemic not happened, 2020 would have seen a higher peak than 2019, and 2022 wouldn't have been as high, as people would have come here earlier. But if Trump was so successful in stopping immigrants, please explain the 2019 peak.
I don't know why you continue to fight against the obvious. Not hypothetically 20 would have been high but actual numbers from 21, 22 and 23, three of the four highest years since 00. While 16,17 and 18 are three of the lowest. It's your graph!
This poster you are arguing with won’t ever admit they were wrong. Happened for literally years in the Covid thread. Anyone who is actually serious about fixing the border knows Biden doesn’t need any legislation to fix it. Neither side wants it fixed for different reasons.
So no explanation for the peak starting in 2019? I admit the obvious. The numbers are high for 2021, 22, and 23. But the peak started in 2019, and only dropped in 2020 due to COVID. Between people not leaving their homes all over the world, and Title 42, 2020 numbers were low. Had COVID not occurred, 2020 numbers would have likely been higher than 2019, and the 2021 numbers wouldn't have been as high. So without COVID, Trump would've had the two highest peaks since 2010. With COVID, he only had one. The reason 21, 22, and 23 are so high was the start of bigger problems in C. and S. American countries taking a turn for the worse in 2018. Here's an article from 2018 explaining how the crisis in Venezuela was bad, and getting worse. Guess what nationality starting showing peak arrivals in 2019? Venezuela! What did Trump do to slow or stop these immigrants from coming? Absolutely nothing that was effective. And again, no COVID, and 2020 numbers are likely higher than 2019 numbers.
Guys, I'm confused. I thought Biden said he needed Congress to pass legislation to do something about the border? Wait, was he lying? The Biden admin is weighing executive action to deter illegal migration at the border The Biden administration is considering taking executive action to deter illegal migration across the southern border, according to two U.S. officials. As passing legislation on border security in Congress appears unlikely, the plans under consideration signal that the White House wants to take action before numbers at the border, which have dropped in the past month, rise again as expected. The plans have been under consideration for months, the officials said. In December, as Congress prepared to leave town for the holidays with no border solution, illegal crossings of the southwest border hit records at more than 10,000 per day.
Again, with the well if Covid hadn't happen the numbers would have been just as high. Well, if my aunt had balls, she would be my uncle!! The numbers are what they are, and we can only speculate as to whether Trump would have kept numbers low, but we do know that Biden didn't. PERIOD!!!!!
