Totally agree with the erudite post of Gatorhead. This has become at a minimum semi-professional football overnight without any true guidance (NCAA is a farce). Where this unguided hot mess rolls is anyone’s guess. Anyone who believes that it is business as usual is simply not reading the tea leaves. Suffice it to say, we will have an entire five year crop of young players, who are simply looking at being paid. During the present time, this means to the highest bidder or the party most likely to write the biggest check. This is such a major change to the ethos of CFB that many will simply lose interest. Unfortunately, this has all occurred under the grossly negligent purview of the denuded NCAA. As this morass unfurls, the game will be to organize the wealthiest group of parties who can write the biggest checks. Once again, this is a major advantage at this time for the University of Florida. In our area, a Bubba stroked a high seven (7) figure check and walked it over to a very happy local sculpture/botanical garden in flip flops because his gift giving aperture deadline was closing. Plenty of these folks equal to or far beyond Phil Knight. Before we lose interest in the game, we loved perhaps we should court some of these folks.
Not glad cfb is pro but glad Napier is studying, following the NFL model. I guess our GM will be handling a ton of negotiations and "trades". And the recruiting department will be changing quite a lot.
Chemistry concerns are the smallest obstacle for a well funded team and that should be Florida. There will be plenty to go around for all and I believe Napier is highly talented in managing players and relating to them. NIL will never be perfect but if a player genuinely likes and respects his coach, he will continue as a happy camper even if he did not receive a seven (7) figure annual NIL contract. I have receded from the “meant to shock you” position asserted in my topic about Mertz/Lagway. I believe Mertz should start but Napier must use Lagway early and often when Mertz goes into the three and out funk. Lagway is a far more refined and battle ready compared to Tebow. Lagway’s statistics cannot be ignored and were garnered against “Big Boy” competition. Specifically, little Willis went toe to toe with eventual State Champ Desoto. Willis lost 65-31 to Desoto, who pulverized Summer Creek 74-14 in the Texas HS 6A finals. Lagway, in a demonstration of the two way threat he is, raced 68 yards up the gut on the first play of the game against Desoto for a touchdown. I love Tim but he did not play the same level of competition in HS at his 1A school. He was a beast but his passing game and arm are not the same as Lagway as a true freshman. He may not be ready for the NFL but not to use this young man ASAP will not do any favors for Napier. Even if he makes a few mistakes (he will), you will not see the “deer in the headlights” look that we have endured for so many years. This is a highly experienced and talented two way threat that needs to be used early and often. Go Gators!
You seem to assume the big $$ donors have yet to be courted.....that would be wrong. The simple fact is that a large portion simply don't believe in the NIL concept and it's hard to argue with them. Paying unproven high school kids outrageous sums of money isn't all that appealing when you know they could easily transfer/not be a productive player/not give effort once the check is cashed. From a business standpoint it's a poor proposition, many would rather give to something tangible and long lasting. Last fall would you have felt better about writing a monthly check to Kamari Wilson or making a sizeable donation in your family's name for some enhancement to UF athletic facilities?
How do you know that the heavy hitters have been approached? Who do you consider a heavy hitter? Take a look at the Forbes list. These are folks that have so much green that a results based proforma is not necessarily a requirement. Let’s get into PB with some paid UF glad-handers and start deep schmoozing. Harvard of the South, football means much to our students and you can be one of the figureheads. We will even allow your Granddaughter to play air guitar to Petty’s song at the end of the third quarter. Whatever is necessary. That is how you rev up NIL in Gatorland. Even Bear Bryant recognized that many years ago. Go Gators!
Your post has some validity in regards to Lagway vis a vis Tebow, but Tebow (who was home schooled) finished his High School career at Nease which is 4A, and defeated Seffner Armwood in the State 4A Championship in 2005 44-37. Tebow was the player of the year in Florida that year across all classifications. Hopefully Lagway will have the same or even more success at UF than Tebow, but it does remain to be seen… that said I am optimistic.
The heavyweight uf affiliated boosters and alumni have been courted.....as they are for all uf related fundraising efforts. You almost seem to suggest this is some great philanthropic opportunity people will flock toward....that is fantasy land. This isn't feeding the poor, trying to cure cancer, or any other noble endeavor. This isn't creating a legacy thru giving, it is not philanthropic. Just ask the guy providing most of uf NIL funds, he hates it.
You got to try. What you are telling me is that the traditional supporters of NIL in Gatorland are unhappy. I am telling you that another highly viable but untested arena remains virgin territory. Florida has hoards of cheek sniffing glad handers on staff and they have yet to go to the ripest fields in the world? Time to put on the thinking cap and go outside the box. If this land of plenty existed in Alabama, Nick Saban would not be playing Jupiter Hills everyday having just moved to Jupiter Island after giving the Tide the high hard one.
Ok fine...people are going to give high school kids millions of dollars and tie it to uf just for kicks. Good luck with that
