I don't have a legal opinion on this at least yet but thought it'd be an interesting discussion not only with respect to the law but also in terms of public health, ethics, any political implications, etc.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2023/10/24/bipartisan-group-of-ags-sue-meta-for-addictive-features.html

    • A bipartisan group of 42 attorneys general is suing Meta over addictive features aimed at kids and teens.
    • The lawsuits represent the broad bipartisan interest in protecting kids and teens from online harm.
    • Meta designed its Facebook and Instagram products to keep young users on them for longer and repeatedly coming back, the AGs allege.

Im for consumer protection but what is next? Taylor Swift addicting teens to her music lawsuit. Call of Duty addicting kids to gaming lawsuit. JK Rowling addicting people to her book lawsuits. UF addicting people to football lawsuits?

I have the same concern. I didn't follow the tobacco litigation, but maybe it's somewhat relevant here? I think one issue there was that the companies apparently lied about nicotine being addictive, lied about the negative health consequences, etc. Seems consistent with the "coverup" typically being "worse than the crime." If social media companies were straightforward about the addictive qualities and potential risks of abuse (I don't know if they have or haven't been), might they be comparatively insulated from liability?

UF has not been guilty of addicting anyone to football since 2009.

I agree with you though. These lawsuits typically bring precedent and future laws and regulations that impact everyone, not just the guilty parties. That said, I can’t say that I am supporting meta( or any of the others) in any way.

save the time and money and just sue the guilty parties: mom and dad! This is just another case of idiots trying to pass the buck on parenting responsibilities. This is like blaming McDonalds for your kid being fat.

Maybe the gators were sued in 2009? At least that would explain why the team can't seem to get their stuff together

Can't some or most of those features in Facebook and Instagram be blocked by the parents of these teens?

Maybe these items should be sold with locks for parents only to unblock?

Lol... the kids know more about computers than their parents do... so that won't work.

Lots of bad stuff done in the name of "protecting children" started with drag shows, then to online porn, no doubt it will be online censorship next like this.

Also its kinda funny this is aimed at Facebook, which is for old people, they should be suing on behalf of boomers. Guess they cant touch Tik Tok since its Chinese, so we get this.

Is there evidence that Taylor Swift or Harry Poter is really bad for kids? There seems to be growing evidence that social media is indeed very bad for kids. To me the questions are: is there enough evidence that FB is bad for kids, is FB aware of it, and did they ignore it and actively targeted kids. I know it’s easy to blame the parents. But a lot of grown ups addicted to social media too. These companies know exactly what buttons to push.

WRT kids, what are studies finding is dangerous? If it’s stuff like body image, wasting too much time, targeted ads… I mean, have you seen tween/kids TV shows, where everyone is popular and looks like a movie star, is meant to suck kids in, and targets them with fashion and pimple cream ads!

While they're at it, sue pharmaceutical companies for overwhelming viewers with their ridiculous ads. We had some friends from Germany visit us recently, and they were floored by such ads. They're almost non-existent on TV there. I wonder if anyone has calculated how many hundreds of millions are spent annually persuading viewers - apparently successfully - to ask our doctor to prescribe that crap.

It isn't that simple. You explain to me how to keep my kids off of social media.

No phone? They will use their friends phone.

No computer? Impossible in todays school age.

I currently have 3 teenagers. Monitoring their online activities is like trying to choose which grain of aand on Siesta Key is most important.

We do a lot of screening and monitoring.
But there is still a lot of sand on the beach.

This is the issue. Instagram has no parental controls. (Facebook isnt a teen thing).

These companies dont want me controlling what my three teens see.

    Greed tends to do that.

Meta is also instagram which is how my kids text and communicate. Insta is huge for teens.

Social media is terrible for kids no doubt. But I don’t think this is the answer.
