Mercedes Invents New Braking System

    Apparently, it never needs to be maintained, and it operates within the sealed drive train, not next to the wheels. It could be revolutionary if they work out the details.

    Agree, EVs and Hybrids are using regenerative braking until the vehicle is going under 5 mph or so. That is why their brake pads can normally last 100K miles.

    My EV brakes all the way to zero as it’s set to one-pedal driving. Only emergency or very hard breaking require the actual brakes.

    I was going to say the same as the above posters. I was told my Prius has traditional brakes, but rarely engage. They are there though, so if you have to "slam on the brakes" it will stop the car like normal braking. EVs are heavy so whatever Mercades is doing is probably a substantial improvement if they think it's good enough to replace disk brakes in an emergency. One possible big improvement I could see is the ability to "correct" while braking if the car computer detects it's sliding sideways, it could let off a wheel or two to automatically swing the car back in line, I guess.
