And you don't see how perhaps even a significant majority of people who don't want these things offered in elementary school libraries can be in that former category?

Well obviously, the lines change depending on what age group we're talking about. I am mostly talking about elementary schools.

    Agreed.

I'd have to read more about the book to have a definitive opinion one way or the other. If it's two males and there's language resembling slogans like "love is love," then I would tend to say it is not age appropriate and falls under the category of an LGBTQ+ book.

That said, if religious texts are available in proportional abundance to books like that, I'd be willing to acknowledge that as fair, despite me disagreeing with the purported mission of elementary school libraries. You want a bit of everything the older of an age group you're talking about, but at that age, kids need to be given rules, direction, and an anchor. Giving them access to a library that comprehensive is comparably dangerous to giving a child internet access, even without considering the harms of vulgarity, profanity, and pornography.

It isn't in a liberal arts college, it is for an elementary school library.

If by "these things" you mean books, no matter how age appropriate, even acknowledging that LGBTQ people exist or that LGBTQ people can be in loving relationships, no.

The person in the OP isn't just targeting elementary school libraries.

It seems to me that you're implying that simply because it would fall under the "category" of an LGBTQ book makes it not age appropriate for elementary school children (in your opinion). Is that correct?

    Then, you're being unreasonable.

The person in the OP seems like a loon.

Any books exploring issues regarding sexual orientation should not be offered in elementary schools because they are not age appropriate for children. Generally LGBTQ+ explores issues regarding sexual orientation, therefore, they would not be age appropriate for children.

Maybe so. But I think it's unreasonable to want to erase LGBTQ people's existence from school libraries.

Agreed. But thus far, she has largely been getting what she wants.

Okay, but the penguin book doesn't explore issues regarding sexual orientation, unless you're saying that simply stating that two male penguins love each other and their baby is exploring issues of sexual orientation. In that case, I'd disagree.

They're not being erased, if you want some Roman Emperor who had orgies in his bathhouses in children's books fine. Just keep his sexual escapades and homosexual relationships out of it.

That's generally how whining in this country works. Make a fuss, people go along to get along. Maybe this is just the pendulum swinging in the other direction.

It depends on how it's written. If it's ambiguous enough that the penguins may just be friends taking care of the baby, then that can probably pass.

So when you say "exploring sexual orientation," you think that includes simply acknowledging a family featuring a same-sex couple? Because when I hear that, I think of actually exploring the mechanics of it. Not just acknowledging that same-sex couples exist and can love each other.

I mean if they are explicitly highlighted as a same sex couple, then yes that is inappropriate for public schools to teach or supply to children.

In other words, public schools must erase the existence of same-sex couples from their libraries?

We're not talking about a Roman Emperor having orgies. You're saying that any book that discusses a same-sex couple must be removed from public school libraries. How do you think that doesn't violate the First or Fourteenth Amendments?

So just to be clear, you think the actual bible should be banned from school libraries because of it's adult themes? And are criticizing me for saying "no, it shouldn't"?

Didn’t ask me, but I don’t think any book should be “banned” from a school library. That implies someone making a decision from above. I think the decision should be made by school librarians, whose judgment I trust far more than Moms for Liberty. Of course they should accept input from actual concerned parents and perhaps err on the side of those concerns. But not hate filled activists that are just trying to stir up violence towards LGBTQ individuals as well as racism

Just for fun, here are some passages from the book that Christians use to claim they have the moral high ground when it comes to book banning ... and a book that school districts say should be allowed in schools... golden dildos, men hung like donkeys at the whore house, scat play, foreskin collectors, getting drunk and banging your dad because there are no other dudes around ... good stuff...

“You also took the fine jewelry I gave you, the jewelry made of my gold and silver, and you made for yourself male idols and engaged in prostitution with them.”

"If two men, a man and his countryman, are struggling together, and the wife of one comes near to deliver her husband from the hand of the one who is striking him, and puts out her hand and seizes his genitals, then you shall cut off her hand; you shall not show pity."

“When she carried on her whoring so openly and flaunted her nakedness, I turned in disgust from her, as I had turned in disgust from her sister. Yet she increased her whoring, remembering the days of her youth, when she played the whore in the land of Egypt and lusted after her lovers there, whose members were like those of donkeys, and whose issue was like that of horses. Thus you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when the Egyptians handled your bosom and pressed your young breasts.”

“Blow on my garden, that its fragrance may spread abroad. Let my lover come into his garden and taste its choice fruits.”

"My beloved put his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him."

“Say to David, ‘The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies.’”

“Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children — as is the custom all over the earth. Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line through our father.”

Damn, I never realized that book was so damn freaky. Talking about grabbing a woman's titties, grabbing a dude by his nuts, hoe-ing and prostitution, children sleeping with their father, "blowing on one's garden"

I'm offended and DEMAND this book be removed from all platforms immediately!

Seems that if this teacher is correct about “tales of a wallflower”, then it would also be true that anyone who owns a Bible should be arrest for child pornography.

Simply awful the way slave owners were treated. The saddest part of her story where she had to adjust to paying wages to freed people to plant her fields and make money for herself …really tugs at the heart strings.

So the Civil Rights Act should have had a cooling off period where discrimination was still legal? Or the Emancipation Proclamation contain a phase in period where slavery was still legal? Or Brown vs Board of Education continuing to allow separate but equal schools? Those were all well established cultural norms, no?

A right is a right, regardless of how new it is or how distasteful someone or some groups may find it. That's exactly what makes it a right, not a privilege.

You don’t think there are hate filled books that say really bad things about homosexuality? How about those that say the holocaust was fake? Or a book that says blacks are an inferior race? I could go on and on. What librarian should have the power to decide what books are acceptable? What if the librarian is far right or left?
