The Cat Food Caucus demands it. But if those words are used against them politically, they will cry foul

We know they’re not going to do it but why do they keep saying they want to?

Great idea. I am all for big social security cuts led by the GOP. I mean their senior citizen culture warriors that the GOP has scared of brown and gay people would loooooove that idea. Do it McCarthy! Do it!

He's certainly right about making a lot of people uncomfortable if he cuts SS and Medicare.

    Right here
In my view, no lines of government spending should be carved in stone, so I have no problem considering this. I even respect the move, as unpopular actions require political strength, which has been sorely lacking in recent years.

That said, 1) such cuts can’t apply to older citizens who have already made their investment choices based on the current level of SS, and 2) McCarthy needs to also be willing to entertain cuts to other aspects of government, such as military, etc. If all he wants to do is take away benefits from poor black people, he can save himself the energy.

How about means test it and couple it with capital gains tax increases?

eff that. Eff old people. So they get theirs but the rest of us get screwed one last time by the boomers before they take the long dirt nap? Nah. If they cut it cut everyone or cut no one. This shit is ridiculous, but perhaps less ridiculous then the snap shit and student loan stuff.

Good talking points for Dems in 2024. That’s the speaker. That is who they are. Don’t listen to the denials

Easy for you to say if you haven't been paying into SS for 53 years without a dime in return.

yeah easy for me to say but I’d prefer they not cut it at all. Ffs. It’s their idea not mine.

Agreed. They want to cut it? That's their business. No carving out the current old people. Eat the political consequences of their actions.

I'll be pleasantly surprised to get any of my $ back after paying in for decades.

Disappointing. Politics over people is rarely your stance.

That's been a standard line for years if not decades. Even under a worst case scenario you're still going to receive your social security benefits although through lower payments if the time should come when the Social Security Trust Fund has insufficient assets to pay full benefits.

Although not a complete solution in and itself there is a rather simple way to shore up the Social Security Trust Fund. It's called legal immigration. Immigrants who tend to be younger than native born Americans would be paying into the system for decades before they become eligible to receive benefits.
    https://bipartisanpolicy.org/downlo...ions-Effect-on-the-Social-Security-System.pdf
In their 2018 report, the Social Security trustees’s low-cost projection assumes immigration (lawful and undocumented combined) will be 65
percent higher than in the high-cost scenario, because the trustees recognize that higher levels of immigration can aid the long-term financial health of Social Security.
Compared with the 2017 report, the 2018 report assumes a .01 percent decrease in payroll taxes collected due to the Trump
administration’s termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allowed at least 800,000 undocumented individuals
who arrived in the United States as children to work legally.

My stance is don't cut Medicare or Social Security. If they insist on cutting it, they should have to deal with the political blowback, rather than screwing over future generations. You want to know how to stop them from cutting Medicare and Social Security? By making it politically painful.

Not so sure about that. However, it least we have known for decades that the SS was likely to be nothing or near nothing by the time we start drawing. Thus we have been planning our whole lives for retirement without SS. The people in retirement now who always assumed there would be a safety net are the ones I worry about here.
