Just crazy that lyrics to an actual song sold commercially and sung in concerts would result in the kid’s punishment for life. You have accused rapists, battery suspects, … given additional chances. Don’t think the punishment fit the crime
I haven't seen anything other than a statement made by the coach that seemed to be forced by the president. Something along the lines of adhering to university principles of hbcu. I'll reserve final judgment but as of now it seems like the kid is not being given a chance over a pretty minor infraction.
I do feel bad for Stokes. I understand why UF pulled the offer but a lower tiered school should def had picked him up and stashed him for a few years. Lower tiered as in a Houston type non P5 school
Its not. Quite a few HBCU teams have a smattering of white players. There was a video of Deion consoling a white JSU player who dropped the potential go-ahead touchdown in their championship game. Kid was a TE
Is this directed at me? I’m not celebrating that they pulled the kid’s offer. What I’m saying is Marcus needs to lay LOW while he figures out his next step. Posting about this offer no doubt triggered the process that lead to the offer being removed. Not saying it’s fair. But this is the situation he’s IN and he has GOT to adapt. Posting something is what got him into this mess in the first place.
Not directed at you at all. The overall situation. I agree about laying low with social media but even then the kid shouldn't be canceled if the coach who presumably knew the situation still offered him. I think the university could have taught a better lesson of inclusion and forgiveness rather than to double down on canceling the kid. Again, I'm open to the possibility there is more to it than i know but on the surface the president seems to have a chip on his shoulder. I'm curious how he handles more serious infractions down the road when his players get into trouble.
Welp, here you go. I’ll use the ‘mute button’ so this thread doesn’t land in the manure pit, THfSG. HBCU coach apologizes for offering Marcus Stokes, ex-Florida QB commit who lost scholarship over racial slur
I’m with your line of thinking on this. Seems there’s more context that isn’t widely known, or something. And I didn’t see the rap video. Just hard to believe he would make the vid, and post it, with the intent of being blatantly derogatory and racist. That’s the only way the severity of these consequences makes any sense to me.
The first question I have is, why are such songs "sold commercially and sung in concerts"? I ask because back when I was this kid's age, all the popular music of the day avoided any controversy with just good music. (There was Elvis, but the controversy there was Elvis the Pelvis thrusting his hips on stage, not the lyrics of his songs. Oh, he called someone a "hound dog." So what?)
It was really stupid is all I think. I wouldn’t really want him because of lack of situational awareness. What he did shouldn’t be a big deal but it is and he should know this.
Quite a "mia culpa" from the coach - "IF I am given an opportunity to do better..." Seriously? The coach is concerned that his job might be at stake because he OFFERED Stokes? What the heck, man? Being PC seems to trump all else these days, esp in academia.
I never saw it, but he apparently rapped a song that had the "N" word in it. When it happened, I asked posters on the paid boards why that was a worse thing than playing songs (with the same word) in their commitment videos, which happens all the time. Whoever watched it (I think it was PD) felt like Stokes posting HIMSELF rapping it is what made the difference. I have to be honest that it seems like a semantic difference, to me. And there is no question the kid has paid dearly for it (Elite 11 Finalist who's best offer is West Florida???).
