I remember the consensus here being Mac Jones was overrated because of his supporting cast. Trask had some good ones too but Mac's team was absolutely loaded! This article seems to validate what many of us believed back then: Mac Jones benched again: Where do the Patriots and young QB go from here? Does it even matter? " Mac Jones is one of the Patriots many problems. The third-year quarterback was 24 of 43 for 260 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions in his last two games when the Patriots have scored a grand total of three points. And two of those picks were returned for touchdowns. .... .....Because Jones was a quarterback who threw to four eventual first-round receivers during his Alabama career and was pressured on an almost unfathomably low 18.9% of his drop backs in his final season with the Crimson Tide." Unfortunately Kyle hasn't been given much opportunity having sat behind Tom Brady and now Baker Mayfield
I never thought Kyle was a starting QB in the league, but should be a solid backup. Thought him and Rex should've won.
Obviously I'm biased but I don't think one has to be a Gator to admit that Florida has been the victim of biases in at least two Heisman votings with Trask possibly being a third. Grossmans was far and away more worthy than Eric crouch. He was snubbed for being a sophomore at the time and a spurrier QB. Tebow was the same qb in 2008 as he was in 2007 with more decorations and accomplishments yet somehow was left off of multiple Midwestern voter's ballots in order to manipulate a total count through collusion. It's always been a farce as it typically goes to the best player on the best or most publicized team but the outright manipulation in those two votes should have devalued the significance of the award if college football media had integrity to call it out and hold the voters accountable. Trask had similar numbers to Jones while playing behind a much worse offensive line and little running game. And people wonder why Gator fans sometimes have a victim complex...
Just to support the point, I think many players (esp QBs) accomplishments should be evaluated in terms of the talent around them. I wish AR had done better here, of course, but wow his supporting cast was miles away from what Young had. Their NFL experiences are proving that out. And then to extend the point, then Bama players Heisman campaigns should be handicapped. And very few, if any, should win.
Am I missing something here? DeVonta Smith was the actual winner of the Heisman in 2020, so if you think Mac Jones is a bum, Smith was one of the guys propping him up. That could be deserving.
Smith won but Mac Jones was in the conversation and Trask was thought to be the frontrunner for some time before LSU happened. But the point of starting this thread was to give support to the thought that Mac Jones was a good but not great QB and it was his supporting cast was what made him look so much better. This seems to be the truth looking through the lens of his journey in the NFL. Not saying that he will never improve and make a serviceable NFL QB, but it doesn't look like he will be as great as Hurts and Burrow have already proven to be. This seemed quite clear at the time and I argued this point with my Bama neighbor (who actually played for the Bear in the 60's).
Tebow in 07 and Danny in 95/96 were incredible, but 2001 Rex was the most awesome QB play I’ve ever witnessed. The way he’d drop back, plant his back foot, and just absolutely sling it was so fun to watch. His Heisman snub is probably the most egregious of all time. He was unconscious that season.
They should have let Kyle kick that crucial field goal against LSU. That would have clinched the Heisman.
