I don't think the state of Louisiana is being smart with this, but I would be willing to guess there are more classrooms in public schools that have these commandments written on the wall of the classroom compared to the 10 commandments:

For those of you that think the US was founded as a Christian nation and that the Constitution supports that idea, here are couple of quotes/writings from some of our Founding Fathers.

    First, James Madison:

“And I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in showing that religion and Government will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together.”

    Second, Thomas Jefferson:
    Letter to Danbury Baptist

For those that don’t know, this letter is where “wall of separation” comes from.

So it's always funny when this happens, i.e. public display of the Decalogue being advocated, to ask "which one?"

Most proponents do not realize there are two versions, one in Exodus, and one in Deuteronomy. The differences are slight, but they are there, especially in the justification for maintaining Sabbath - whether its due to the Creation in 7 days (Exodus), or because of delivery from Egypt (Deuteronomy). The latter are supposed to be directly written by Divine hand.

Louisiana decided to just use the "short form" not in either text and omit all that, plus the Divine promise to punish children for their father's (and prior generations) sins as part of the Second Commandment, which I imagine would not sit well with a young student in class with a less than pious father, grandfather or great grandfather. Oh well, can't be too faithful to the text, with that punishment in there. In both cases a lot of reference to your slaves, which were Divinely sanctioned, but Louisiana leaves that out as well.

    From the Louisiana Bill

    (2) The text shall read as follows: 19

    "The Ten Commandments

20 I AM the LORD thy God.

21 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

22 Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven images.

23 Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain.

24 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

25 Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord 26 thy God giveth thee.

    27 Thou shalt not kill.

28 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

    29 Thou shalt not steal.

30 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

31 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his 2 cattle, nor anything that is thy neighbor's."

From Exodus Chapter 20:1-18 (NAB for both)

Then God delivered all these commandments:

"I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods besides me.

You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers' wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation; but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation, on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments.

"You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain. For the LORD will not leave unpunished him who takes his name in vain.

"Remember to keep holy the sabbath day. Six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God. No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter, or your male or female slave, or your beast, or by the alien who lives with you. In six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.

"Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you.

    "You shall not kill.

    "You shall not commit adultery.

    "You shall not steal.

"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

"You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass, nor anything else that belongs to him."

    Deuteronomy 5 (again NAB)

Since you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain, I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to announce to you these words of the LORD:

'I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods besides me.

You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishments for their fathers' wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation but bestowing mercy, down to the thousandth generation, on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments.

'You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain. For the LORD will not leave unpunished him who takes his name in vain.

'Take care to keep holy the sabbath day as the LORD, your God, commanded you. Six days you may labor and do all your work; but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God. No work may be done then, whether by you, or your son or daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or ass or any of your beasts, or the alien who lives with you. Your male and female slave should rest as you do. For remember that you too were once slaves in Egypt, and the LORD, your God, brought you from there with his strong hand and outstretched arm. That is why the LORD, your God, has commanded you to observe the sabbath day.

'Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD, your God, has commanded you, that you may have a long life and prosperity in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you.

    'You shall not kill.

    'You shall not commit adultery.

    'You shall not steal.

'You shall not bear dishonest witness against your neighbor.

'You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. 'You shall not desire your neighbor's house or field, nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass, nor anything that belongs to him.'

"These words, and nothing more, the LORD spoke with a loud voice to your entire assembly on the mountain from the midst of the fire and the dense cloud. He wrote them upon two tablets of stone and gave them to me.

I actually think the religious test clause is even more compelling, not that that kind of stuff matters anymore

    Article VI, Clause 3:

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

And right after they passed this law, Louisiana legislators left the building to publicly pledge their undying political fealty to a rapist adulterer.

"We super totally love the Lord," they said.

For clarity. I like the 10C in the classroom. I don't think legally it should be forced at the restriction of others rights to do the same.

I notice you ignored the part where I took a shot at the conservative position on guns.

What's with you today? Where have I ever claimed my religion should be instituted by the state? I have always claimed quite the opposite.
