Short "breaking news" article on CNBC at this point, but Johnson says he's going work with Jefferies to hammer out a short term spending bill to avoid the shut down. Republicans says they already have 6+ "No" votes. Will he do it anyway? Will Gaetz pull the plug on the new guy after this?

House Speaker Johnson predicts 'bipartisan agreement' on two-step government funding plan (cnbc.com)

“In about an hour, I’ll go in with all the House Republicans, and [Minority Leader Rep.] Hakeem Jeffrey’s will go meet with all the Democrats, and we’ll figure out that the final numbers,” Johnson told CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

Johnson said he did not yet know how much support he would receive from within his own party, where more than a half-dozen members have already said they would oppose the plan in a floor vote.

Gaetz somehow being the defacto decision maker of the GOP is fitting for where the GOP is.

Was not excited about this guy, but am impressed he is looking to work with the other side to make sure we do what needs to be done.

Seems like he is acting like an adult, which is a pleasant change from the recent history in the house.

I thought just in another thread that your side was arguing that Mike is the leader of the GOP. Now it is Gaetz? Yesterday it was Trump?

I don't have a "side" so if you'd like to have a discussion with me you're going to have to move past team sports logic. Thanks.

We have 3 branches of govt, one guy is the defacto leader of the Republican party (and the party’s pick for Pres), another guy - the Speaker of the House - is ostensibly the highest ranked Republican official currently in govt, except for a band of yahoos in his own party holding outsized leverage over him.

Is this really confusing to you?

Not sure which pub you think is “doing what’s best for the country”. If you were referring to Gaetz then bless your heart. If it’s Johnson, then yes he deserves some credit for being “willing” to cross the isle and for being realistic to prevent a govt shutdown (although it shouldn’t even be a thing worthy of praise to work within the framework the constitution has set up, it should just be an obvious duty, unfortunately not all Republicans feel the same way).

I disagree. Johnson, like his ousted predecessor, has no choice if he actually wants to make progress and secure the funding. Otherwise, they’d be forcing their far right agenda into the process.

Uh.... This is a thread about Johnson siding with the dems to, once again, pass a continuing funding bill. So yes, I would say it is obvious that Johnson is doing the right thing now. But I also will give Gaetz some props because we have been governing this way for ever and we need to go back to normalized budgets being passed. Very few really want the government to shut down, but I think to many like to discuss things but not pass anything and at very end be pushed in the corner and this is the only option. So, since Johnson just took over, I think he is doing the right thing, but I also think that this needs to be last time and we move bad to normal budgets be passed. If this passes, he will have till May, I think, so if we do not get it done by then, I think a shutdown is in the cards. I only wish that the elected officials were the first ones to not receive their checks, but we hopefully will not have to cross that road.

Gaetz in the House and Tuberville in the Senate are kings of the Hill. (Tuberville's influence is mainly confined to weakening the military and national security, but that goes a long way. His colleagues who don't like it can shove it.)

    What are you disagreeing with?

Maybe I should have said I was "relieved" not "impressed" that we have what appears to be an adult in charge rather than the MAGA arsonist I was afraid was in charge.

Disagreeing with the assertion that Johnson chose the current path of a more bipartisan approach. It was forced on him. That’s all.

He had a choice. Work together with dems or force/risk a shutdown.

He should also have more autonomy as Speaker to make that choice, considering the nutjobs annointed him as “one of theirs” like 5 minutes ago.

If they did another motion to vacate after the McCarthy fiasco, it would be 100x more incriminating and embarrassing the 2nd go around. We all know politicians don’t have spines, but at some point you’d think the moderates/sane republicans would threaten something (resign, go indy, or even switch parties).

If House passes a CR to keep the government open, another motion to vacate the chair whether introduced by Gaetz, Marjorie Tayler Green or one of the other Freedom Caucus/MAGA nutcakes in the House is still not beyond the realm of possibility keeping in mind that their real objective isn't to govern it's to cause chaos.

"...meet the new boss....same as the old boss..."

    Fooled again.

Glad some of y'all take great joy in being fooled and deceived, pimped and sold out, by our overlords.

(at least some of us support efforts to change, even if we keep getting screwed--better than fools high fiving over the srewers, srewing them s'more... then again, maybe not. Maybe the late Bobby Knight was right--"if you're getting raped, may as well surrender and enjoy it").

Right. Because it is good and noble that we continue to spend like drunken sailors, until the job (i.e. the country) is good n ruint... just wouldn't be right to try to stop the ruination.

Like you I was/am pretty alarmed by some of his past votes and positions, but seems to be trying to act like the adult in the room, so far.

Louisiana as a state relies heavily on federal funds. A gubmnt shutdown hurts them so much that he is getting more pressure from home than from Gaetz.
