Fact: Mertz currently is the top QB in the SEC with his completion percentage. This dude is ridiculous. JMHO
Thank you for that compliment, and I totally agree with your assessment of that guy. Snarky and condescending... Although, I was having some fun with him... letting him dig that hole... deep and wide.
And just exactly why do you think he would suggest this? Do you think he is doing it so that UF can become great again? HELL NO, he just wants us to have more turmoil so we won't gain positive footing in our program. And switching coaches every two or three years does that.
And when it’s a blowout at half, tge metrics point to a blowout at half. The offense plays with a lead and the second stats are quite different than they would be if the scoreboard were switched. Stats are a place to start but computers have no cognitive skills or we wouldn’t need coaches.
Here is what I see from Napier’s offense. - Season 1 had a magically talented QB who struggled to make the average play. Completed bombs better than the 15 yard out route. Running game super strong. No receiver on the team who could take the top off a defense. No real tight end threat. Result, not surprisingly, was an inconsistent offense if the running game was shut down. - Season 2. QB who is damn accurate and makes the right read. Still no proven deep threat though I’m guessing it is on the team in the form of a freshman (skinny freshman get stuffed by SEC DBs in man). Still no tight end threat. Offensive line is mediocre in pass pro. Worried that the result will be an inconsistent offense if the running game gets shut down unless some down field threats are identified. I know a lot of folks are calling for more deep balls and it was there for Billy in his prior gig. I am convinced it will be there when we have tight ends and wide receivers that force safeties (and LBs) to respect the deep ball. Right now the percentages say hand the ball to your best players (running backs) to soften the defense for your less talented players (WRs/TEs). I have concerns in areas with Billy- time management at end of halfs last year, special teams. Would I prefer an explosive offense? Sure, but that to me is far more a function of the talent on the team than Billy. And, yes, I watch GNFP and hear about our crowded route trees. I would ask: “would I rather have Ricky finding a hole in a bunch route or trying to beat a 6’2” SEC corner in one on one downfield for a jump ball or fade route?” And Ricky is our BEST receiver! Our guys get little separation from their athletic ability so spreading out to force individual coverage is questionable. All I will say is how easy Monday morning quarterbacking is when you get to draw up plays with imagined talent rather than the roster a coach has. GNFP praises billy for the run game but beats him up for the passing game without, in my opinion, accounting for the limitations on our roster.
Good post. I see many of the same thing and have the same questions. We have 40+ on staff and I’d like to think they see as much and more than we do. They practice and see what works and what doesn’t. We are limited to our personal no doubt. Put Anthony , Green, and Hilliard on the roster and I am willing to bet the routes and playcalling is night and day. I wonder what the stat should would tell our staff to do.
Lucky for us ET banned this clown for a few days! FWIW, I don’t think he’s a troll - just an annoying, pedantic individual who feels the need to lecture.
Perhaps this is the fundamental disconnect between your personal approach to observing Gator football and that of others. Why lay blame at all? The team is already ahead of schedule for this year. We just got a huge win against a rival. Despite playing two highly ranked opponents (current SoS = 7), the scoring average is higher than last year. So again, why feel a need to lay blame?
2022 through 3 games: 76 points, zero passing touchdowns, 4 interceptions, 15/36 on 3rd down, between 50-60% completion percentage, and 1059 total yards. 2023 through 3 games: 89 points, 3 passing touchdowns, 1 interception, 13/33 on 3rd down, 75% completion percentage, and 1255 total yards. Despite whatever cherry-picked stats you produce, the offense is about the same as last year if not slightly better when adjusted for things like missed field goals and sloppy penalties thanks to starting off on the road at Utah instead of getting them at home.
It's really a great weekend for cfb matchups. Sometimes it's nice when the Gators play a lower team, so we can dial down our fan intensity and enjoy watching some other teams play in high-pressure games. This list doesn't even include the Nolies @ Clemson, so it's really a good slate on Saturday. Also, they are saying that Cam Rising might be back for Utah against UCLA. That will be an interesting matchup.
Very astute analysis. Like a lot of people, I'd love to see more of a vertical passing game but I think that will evolve with the development of the younger receivers. My big concern is how this offense will operate when the Gators trail by 10 points or more. In the mean time, I'd like to see a few more deep pass attempts. I know there's not a lot of speed at the position but isn't Douglas a burner? One secret weapons might be Boardingham who ran a sub 11 second 100m in high school. Can't see the Gators looking respectable in a track meet with UGA without stretching the field vertically.
Its simple. He must continuously bash Mertz because for some weird reason, he appears to believe that any success Mertz has diminishes his assessment of AR's performance in comparison. Its sad that a supposed Gator fan can't just enjoy that we just won a big rivalry game after a year of going 0 fer.
I can't see UGa getting into a track meet....they want to ground and pound you if they can. They are slowly easing Beck into the QB slot. Also Douglas doesn't look terribly fast as a WR to me..more of a Dallas Baker type. Wilson definitely looks the part, but I haven't seen them send him deep yet.
