A four day 10 hour day is ok with me.

New union head flexing hard. Having trouble sympathizing with them over turned down offers. Salaries have been flatlined because they were insane in the 80’s with all the high quality work.

Really is a battle of workers vs shareholders… ymmv

For all the complaints I've been seeing on TH lately about how the everyday American is suffering due to inflation, the same people don't want a group of those Americans to get a pay raise to help them with inflation.
What they are asking for is a LOT, but they are asking for that so they can negotiate to what is actually acceptable.

your word salad is served with nonsensical dressing.

the very purpose of a union is not to get you paid what you are worth individually, but instead collectively, which rewards crap and holds back the cream.

I find that some things are best understood when put in common sense (what you call simpleton) terms. 99% of the wealth is created by the cream. Is it necessarily deserving? Nope. But very few average people create wealth.

Everything you typed was wrong. The purpose of a union is to protect workers from being commoditized by greedy capital owners. It is a tool they use just like greedy capital owners use outsourcing and automation.

Really? That’s the purpose? Well then, they really suck at it.

Do you know the best way to protect yourself from the greedy capitalist? Become a capitalist yourself and become your own boss. Be the cream and leave the whey behind.

If I put numbers out there, I include the link to where I saw it. You either pulled it out of your butt or you don't have one. This message board should require links. You lost credibility. You can't answer a simple question.

They should just switch to pay by production. Want a four day work week? Produce the output quota and go home. Heck, do it in one day if you can.

Don't think the workers will go for that though, would require too much actual work.

Ramifications of a prolonged strike? Supply chain? User car and new car costs jumping, ie another bubble in the inflationary stream. And then once they settle, higher wages are passed on to the consumer. It should be really interesting to see how this plays out. Biden has already hitched his wagon to the UAW, so if this blows up in our faces, it’s his baby.

Not every worker can be measured by clear cut metrics like that either.

Sure, fair enough. Many who wouldn't have an applicable production unit quota will have other deliverables. Get your project work done, your deliverables completed, your administrative stuff done and the same applies. Afaik most professional roles kind of play by that rule already though, I don't know too many salaried corporate type roles that count hours directly.

I'm pretty sure this is almost entirely workers directly on the production floor though.

For what it's worth I also think executive salaries are ridiculous and we as consumers should do our best not to support them. The answer to your ceo getting an unjustified 40% raise isn't to similarly expect an unsustainable raise. At a certain point you have to realize there is only so much money. Maybe ask for reasonable raises and for executive pay to be only increased the same as the average employees yearly raise. That's called compromise though which isn't something either side is interested in.

Every single time since the automotive industry started they compromise. I’m still confused why anyone would resent workers negotiating for better pay and benefits.

That’s what I always wonder if the companies start losing billions will the UAW agree to cut the wages?
