There is a real possibility that he will never be able to recruit to the level of Donovan in his prime (just because it is too slimy) but I DO believe he implicitly understands the pieces he needs to succeed (unlike White), identify those pieces and attempt to sign them (selling positive energy to the recruits), and then mold the team to what is his philosophy. And I also think he understands what is a grad assistant, a two-year player and a HS signee who can hang on for a number of years. And obviously he understands the opportunities and pitfalls of a one-and-done elite player. I seriously doubt he thought Kugel fit this mold (maybe a two-and-done) but it may manifest, like it did with Donovan and Beal. And so, I believe/hope he isn't going to have to mesh this many pieces in the future. I wish players weren't so "certain" in their place and so they take their success for granted, but they ARE human. Besides Castleton wanting to "prove" he is NBA-worthy and Reeves wanting to get there also (and pressing too much), this team seems to have growing pains. And that includes the normal "theory versus reality" play as it relates to coaching and player evaluation. If this team has a "whoops" in its makeup, it may be that it did not get enough help in the 3-point shooting. We shall see. And I also believe that we have to realize (whether we like it or not) that you just don't go out and recruit an All-SEC caliber PG, unless you are Kentucky. You roll the dice and take your chances. Time to get educated and get better.
I’m surprised CC is still failing when double-teamed which imo, he has been doing for 3 years. That needs to be fixed straight away if we want to make the tournament. I had to listen to the radio which looks like a blessing. Any reason Jitiboh can’t play the 5 and put Castleton at the 4? Something has to change when your 4 has ZERO points in a home game. That’s just flat putrid.
It looks like we have some type of offensive plan for CC. We need some type of plan that incorporates the others. I didn’t see that last night, just a lot of 3 point shots, and bad angles when trying to drive to the basket. FAU got much better production on their drives and put-backs than we did.
its wonderful we are expanding CC’s game … facing up, away from the hoop and even putting the ball on the floor. But I hope we don’t abandon his back to the basket game. When Colin faces up or puts the ball on the floor, he is less comfortable. He will often score bc he is so good, but he isn’t drawing doubles, passing or getting the defense in rotations. When he is on the blocks…. i think more of this happens.
Reeves got us back in it at the end with 8 straight points, but I agree, we need more others and the bench. Also, CC needs to learn when not to shoot, he forces way too many shots.
I think the offense is supposed to have more passing from CC when he gets the ball in the high post, but he's driving a lot instead. It's wearing him out. I don't know if he does this because no one is cutting or getting open for an outside shot or if he's trying to carry the team.
IMO, yes. I think he has a "thing" he thinks that will get him into the NBA and it works well, at least at this level. Now he has to realize that he HAS to get the others involved, or else he isn't going to win games when the other team is just as good on that night. Call it a maturation process. Usually, the leadership goes through the PG and not the center/best player. Perhaps Lofton will "remind" him of the structure of the offense. As you say, he isn't going to last the entire season if, analogy speaking, Tebow is always running the ball.
Yeah, I'm worried CC is trying to show something to the NBA. I don't know if Golden has had to work around players who are trying to do this instead of running the offense.
After looking at the box scores, I'm still baffled that we lost this game. We had a big edge in rebounds, we shot almost 50% from 3, 82% from the free throw line, we blocked shots. And still lost.
True.. but long term he needs to feel the double team and pass out of it better, he needs to become a better passer when in the high post. My guess is they are all still learning the offense and the system. CC does what comes naturally… it will take time for the offense to flow and look the way TG wants it to.
Yeah, but CC getting the ball in the high post doesn’t automatically move the defense. If he gets the ball on the blocks, more often than not…. You will see a double, and opportunity to move the ball and play some inside/out; and get the defense in rotation.
I'm not saying he was - take "worry" at face value. CC looked fatigued as the game progressed. I don't think he can carry us with that effort for the entire season.
Yes I believe Felder had zero points. Eventually it looks like Fudge will have to start We had that long stretch in the 1st where it looked like we got punched in the mouth and weren't expecting it. Can't just show up and expect to win, especially against "lower-level" instate teams that really want to beat us on our home court. Lesson learned hopefully, just don't let it happen again
Here are stats showing the Team's player usage/assists as a % of plays along with standard assists/points per game for those playing the most minutes. We're running a lot through CC & getting rewarded with 31% of our points from him. Would you change anything with this setup? AST% -- Assist Percentage - An estimate of the percentage of teammate field goals a player assisted while he was on the floor. USG% -- Usage Percentage - An estimate of the percentage of team plays used by a player while he was on the floor.
I agree with this. FAU was lights out and we were not. I’m hoping we learn from it and ALWAYS play tough defense at every position for the entire game. I can’t see coach putting up with lack of effort on defense. I wouldn’t say he was out coached, his players just did not play well, stop the threes, etc. Some games you don’t shoot well but you can always play tough defense if you are committed to it. I’d rather lose a game you should have won (on paper) now than later in the season.
