It's primarily the staff evals.....they love the kids they landed

That's encouraging. I didn't think they'd just take kids to fill slots.

I know a lot of people here are talking about the subjectivity of portal rankings of players. All rankings are subjective by nature. But my argument to that would be that portal rankings of players should actually be MORE accurate than that of HS players. Portal players, esp those who have have actually played at D1 level, have shown their ability. HS players are much more projections, IMO, based on specs/competition level/stats/etc.

That is a great point. It also makes me think in a year or two, some of these kids that we finished 2nd for (seems like a lot of them) might be more likely to head our way. It's working well for Norvell.

Exactly. I think we are still in mending fences mode to get back in play with the big names in recruiting.

I could agree with HS prospects being ranked on athleticism and potential. I do think it is some of the same with portal transfers.
    1. A lot of them havent played much at D1 level. Hence why they are transferring. Most studs that transfer are looking for green$ pastures. Others are looking for actuall playing time to prove their worth.
    2. A lot of the portal hype is based on their previous HS ranking.... whether they lived up to it before transferring or not. How many "former 5 star" transfers have we already seen this cycle? They didnt do jack in college so maybe they are still basing the hype off HS?
    3. A lot of variables of why a kid may reach their potential in college or not. Position fit, scheme fit, culture, nutrition/weight room, Co-eds, academics, etc. This is why I think these superficial rankings can be thrown out compared to the very in depth evaluations the coaching staff will do. I trust Napes evals more.

    4. Not all players are available at the same time. The portal entry and exit deadlines are almost year round. Players come and go. How do you reasonably rank them when the "pool" is constantly changing. Short answer... you dont.

I can sum it all up neatly. Portal rankings are trash. Another revenue stream to keep the clicks coming.

Much needed. A linebacker that could pass cover might have given us a couple more wins last year.

Should be....but just looking at the ranks and some of it is laughable. In their defense, a lot of guys haven't put much of anything on film. How do they rank Corey Collier or Chief Borders for example? Collier seems to be ranked based on his high school ranking, but ignoring he coudn't get on the field in 2 years despite abysmal safety play.

Yes, these portal rankings are useless.

Do you see any reason to keep Scooby at ILB with the addition of Nunnery? Shouldn't he be at OLB if he has the strength? I haven't seen anything of him at ILB that makes me think he is going to be a gamechanger there.

Seems to me we are looking toward Lagway instead of putting our money into kids that we could rent for a year.. getting to young kids and plugging holes.

Quite a gamble. Lagway being effective is TWO seasons from now, IMO. Back to back to back losing seasons will get Napier canned, IMO. Poor QB play with our schedule = losing record. Can't wait for DJ. Gotta hope Wertz is WAY better than everyone thinks or that we find a spring QB.

Napier is in no way in danger of getting fired no matter what his record is this year. Wins and losses won’t do it at this point. The wheels would have to fall off .

    I agree with that.

My point is that we are waiting for Lagway, we'll have to wait TWO seasons for him to be an effective SEC QB. So that means possibly two more seasons with subpar QB play, which will result in losing seasons. No chance our fanbase/AD would allow 3 losing seasons in a row...from ANY coach.

That is obviously the one thing they’re NOT doing. I mean, you’ve been watching this process haven’t you?

Doctor, I’m sure you see patients all the time who are too quick to assume the worst case scenario rather than taking the next step and crossing the next bridge.

Let’s allow the staff to take a long look at Mertz this spring, see if the right transfer is needed and can be brought in, see how the season progresses, and do the same following next season. There’s still a long way to go before we just pencil us in for two bad seasons and abysmal quarterback play. Lots of things evolve and can even change quickly. The journey and struggle is where the fun is
