Much is said on our 3rd down defense and the DBs, but even the best can’t cover for too long. I think LSU was giving up 4 sacks per game and we get only 1. I realize that we needed to contain him, but we still need to put him on the ground or at least hurry more throws.
With the new rules you’re 50/50 on picking up a roughing the passer with a sack. Not sure it’s worth it, better to box and contain.
I think coming in, we thought we could get pressure with rushing 4. If you go back and watch them 3rd and longs, you can see we only rushed 4 (mixed looks sending different positional personnel). The lack of talent and depth are showing up. Basically, whiffing in the portal this past offseason is really hurting us right now. The guys are gassed leading to being a step too late to the scene. Miller being a step too late is a talent issue. For all his heart and on-field awareness, he lacks high end speed at the position. I think moving forward, you will see us blitz more on third downs. Unfortunately, when we did blitz on first and second downs, the guys are not winning any one on ones to make a difference. Long story short: talent is sorely lacking unfortunately and the lack of depth helps to expose it even more.
Well, if I were recruiting against you I would say you will be much better off developing under my coaching staff and even if it takes an extra season, we will make you into something the NFL admires and wants.
We talked about it last game, but we play the DT a lot to “clog” vs penetrate to cut down on center runs. Whenever we stunt, we tend to leave the middle wide open as someone misses an assignment. Dex also is not really a DT, but that is how we use him because tweeners mattered. A couple big DT and Dex off the end . The LB play to clean the lanes is still a work 8n progress. The scheme on both sides of the ball will get a lot of chatter as ESD approaches. Up to CBN to control the narrative. SEC P5 big boy britches time. Go Gators
Sacks are nice but it’s an overrated statistic. Georgia has 7 sacks (#125 in the nation) but is 14th in 3rd down conversion allowed and 3rd in total defense.
