Our dog suffers from storm anxiety, as well, and she is getting worse as she ages. It’s really sad because there is nothing we can do, other than try and comfort her. Suggestions are absolutely welcome.

As an FYI, while the intent is to comfort what you are actually doing is rewarding anxiety. Best thing to do during storms and fireworks is to act like it is normal and only pet or give attention while they act normal. So reward behavior you want and ignore behavior you don’t want.

Had similar problems with a wonderful German Shepherd but when we gave her doggie CBD it helped a lot. Before that she would race from one side of the house to the other barking at the thunder monster and ain’t no one sleeping when a shepherd is giving it their all barking. She also chased the windshield wipers on the car making it so hard to drive I would have to turn on the rear wipers for her to harass instead.

 

Batshit craziness probably didn't help.

 

Yes, it’s gotten worse with age. We got her meds but they didn’t really seem to work.

 

Keep your energy low during storms (ain't nothin but a thing) and don't pay much attention to the dog, unless it's being calm. If your dog calms down, you can reward that behavior w attention, but not until then.

 

Abject cruelty is one of the ways to prove yourself as diehard MAGA.

 

The "Commander say "Hello" to Cricket" line was way over the top. Absolutely no need to say something like that. Noem is destroying her career.

 

Similar to Palin, it's hard to be in touch with the greater states when you rep such a small and selective minority. I'm not excusing her or her behavior. She's batshit cray and not qualified to rep the greater good.

Respectfully, it has nothing to do with my energy. She has storm anxiety. Nobody even needs to be around her for her to go nuts.

 

As to dogs, we had a Shepard as a kid and a lab a while ago. Crate trained both. They learn to view it as a safe space and go to it during storms.

Unlike many people, I don’t view dogs as humans, and I think they should be trained. I have little patience for unruly dogs. I don’t hold it against the dogs, but the owners. I like dogs, but they are too much of a burden for me. Like having a 3 year old child for the rest of your life. After we found somebody else to adopt our lab, it took 6 months to a year to get over the sudden panic of “uh oh where is the dog” - as she would get into something and the house had to be continually dog proofed.

I would have no patience either with a dog that bit somebody 25 times. 99 out of 100 dogs would probably get put down for that, not that I specifically advocating for that.

However it is one thing not necessarily seeing a dog as a human, it is quite another when people like Noem are just cruel, and then brag about it.
