She was right. It was about freedom, the freedom of a very small number of human beings to own and exploit other human beings. It was also about states rights, the right of some states to maintain the institution in which the same small number of human beings owned and exploited other human beings.

I don't think it was a mistatement or historical ignorance, I think she perceived, likely correctly, that it was the kind of answer she had to give to maintain viability with the Republican base

If so, then I think she overestimated that slice of Republicans. But, if by Republican base you mean MAGAs then she might be trying to peel away trump voters. Regardless, I think she will have a different answer next time - and there will be a next time.

Hard to say. It wasn't an elegant thread the needle that the best pols are able to pull off, having everyone hear what they want to hear.

But we do disagree about the R base - I think the sentiment is far more pervasive, and crosses the party line to a limited extent.

It's not so much about the fact of slavery and the Civil War; it's a way of communicating that the South (and by extension, all of us - the whole nation profited from slavery), thinks it should no longer be discussed - it's over, get over it, as Scalia would say about stealing the 2000 election. Same thing DeSantis is doing in education, and in many other places - white people, speaking broadly, don't want to hear it any more, regardless of historical truth or current impact. They think they have "suffered" enough hearing about it. They know reason undermines that but they have the power and are now unafraid to use it. Even before Trump, John Roberts and Scalia said we embrace racist voter suppression without shame.

She doubled-down on stupid. How can we trust her with negotiating with Putin and Xi? Just terrible.

She must be making headway, I just saw an ad, that must have been national, calling her tricky Nikki and going on about how she’s a China schill.

The DeSantis super PAC has actually been running ads calling her a China shill for a couple of months. If I recall Meatball Ron DeSanctimonious tried that tactic in one of the debates. Just out of curiosity are you referring to new ad from the Trump campaign?

Didn’t know who it was from, I live in a later primary state so it was the first one I saw. I looked up the PAC later and it was with DeSantis.

A real bang-up answer here from Nikki Haley:

    Very principled.

States with Open Primaries 2023 - Wisevoter

it would seem like her only real chance nationwide is a widespread effort to get Democrats to cross over in open primaries.

States with Open Primaries 2023 - Wisevoter

Of course openly encouraging democrats to cross over will win you a RINO designation, but she’s never going to win over the MAGA majority of Republicans.

Yeah she’s definitely playing the squish. However realistically right now if you are going to play in the Republican sandbox you can’t criticize Trump or else voters will reject you. It didn’t win Chris Christie many Republican votes.

Nimrata Randwaha says it's not a racist country but plays a white woman with a different name on tv so her party's racist voters might choose her.

Someone is worried about Nikki’s momentum based on this terrible hit piece. I don’t care if Nikki or any politician is hooking up while married as long as adults are making adult decisions. Reminds me of the movie the Contender with Joan Allen. Great movie.

Nikki Haley DID cheat on husband Michael - had affairs with her comms consultant and a MARRIED South Carolina lobbyist before she became governor, sworn affidavits and new witnesses claim | Daily Mail Online

Presidential candidate Nikki Haley falsely denied cheating on her husband when she was accused of engaging in two extramarital affairs during her gubernatorial campaign, multiple sources who worked with her claim.

New witnesses have come forward telling DailyMail.com that Haley's denials of two alleged 2008 affairs are false, and that the supposed trysts were brazen and widely known among South Carolina politicos.

Will Folks, 49, and Larry Marchant, 61, both signed affidavits in 2010 alleging they had a sexual relationship with the then-South Carolina lawmaker, before she went on to become governor.

Multiple GOP insiders told DailyMail.com that they were intimately aware of Haley's infidelity as a South Carolina lawmaker – including tales of steamy liaisons in the back of her Cadillac SUV, 'canoodling' in her lovers' laps at bars, and nights spent together in a Columbia, South Carolina duplex.
