this is the way it should be. ship lost power, 3 tugs already connected, three more dispatched and engaged, bridge safe. No structure is going to stop these 1000 ton ships. who knows if they had the tide in their favor or not

On Friday evening, a massive container ship lost power as it was heading out to sea in the shipping lane between Staten Island and Bayonne, New Jersey, according to the New York Post.

The incident came as the ship was near the vicinity of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, bringing to mind the potential of a repeat of the March 26 accident in Baltimore in which a container ship lost power and drifted into the Francis Scott Key bridge, demolishing the structure.

I would add that there are two huge differences between the incidents in New York and Baltimore. First, the container ship in New York was being accompanied by escort tugs unlike the ship in Baltimore which was completely on its own and secondly the Verrazano bridge is a suspension bridge (see top picture) with considerably more space between its supporting piers than the Key Bridge in Baltimore (lower pic) and even if the ship in NY was unable to restart the probability that it would have hit a pier is much less than the probability of the collision in Baltimore.

 

Yes, lots of differences. The biggest difference is there was a plan in place in the event of engine failure to help prevent catastrophe. Tugs should be mandatory at all places where these massive ships are crossing under bridges.

 

Is it too soon for some humor? This event had to remind me of my late brother, who had a job as a reporter for the Daytona Beach News Journal. A ship hit a bridge somewhere in Florida, I forget where, but he wrote the paper's article about it, and the headline he wrote (and as published) was "When the Ship Hits the Span."

 

Ship has been removed, port is mostly back in business.

 

Was wondering if the crew, who had to stay on ship the entire time got paid for that time.

This and the rebuilding of the collapsed highway bridge in (OH or PA?) shows what we are capable of. But normally our infrastructure process is so mired in regulations, legal hurdles and red tape it’s hard to accomplish anything.

Justice Department Settles Baltimore Bridge Collapse Suit for $100 Million

The Justice Department had sought $103 million when it sued two Singaporean corporations: the ship’s registered owner, Grace Ocean Private Ltd., and Synergy Marine, which managed it. The two companies agreed to pay $102 million in the settlement, the Justice Department said Thursday.

In a statement, a top Justice Department official said the resolution marked an important milestone and an early settlement in the federal government’s effort to recoup the costs of responding to the disaster.

“This resolution ensures that the costs of the federal government’s cleanup efforts in the Fort McHenry Channel are borne by Grace Ocean and Synergy and not the American taxpayer,” said Justice Department official Benjamin C. Mizer.
