I can tell from your last paragraph that we’re on separate highways here, and that explains your fixation on Christian nationalism.

I’m talking about the initial spread of Christianity in the first century, a time when the state was very much against the Christians to the point of putting many to death. It was during that time that Christianity introduced caring for the poor and the needy, the widows and orphans, and the sick and dying across ethnic, racial, and national boundaries. Christianity gave value to the lowest members of society. These values that we hold dear today, were not widespread at all in the ancient world.

Roman Emperor Julian saw that Christian charity was open to all, even pagans. He didn’t like that pagan citizens received that charity, so he tried to infuse it into the Roman Temple worship. That was not something their religion practiced. There are many other examples of Christian values spreading into the culture.

I never argued that tying Christianity to the state made the state more moral. You’re talking about a time centuries into the future from what I was discussing. That’s an entirely different subject, but apparently the subject you’re addressing even though I wasn’t.

By the way, just to be clear, I am not a Christian nationalist.

 

The Christian purges had more to do with the fact that they refused military service than them being too nice to everyone and minding their own business. Certainly tying the religion to the state made military service less of an issue, and made the church more violent and militant in relation to geopolitical ambition. Hard to imagine the Crusades without that turn.

 

Speaking of Julian, that's kind of a fun example of a guy that was for smaller government in a bloated bureaucracy and decided things had gotten too "woke" and wanted to go back to the old ways. Almost certainly killed by the "woke mob" i.e. one of his own men in battle.
