In my first job out of UF, I work with a guy who had done that as a kid with an M80 and blew off half a finger. He would always tell people, “Give me a high 4-1/2.”

 

My cousin was a gym teacher at the middle school. Pretty athletic for a an older guy. He could dunk a basketball. He dunked it one day and got his wedding ring stuck on the hooks that hold the net up and came down without a finger. It was "Give me 9 and 1/2 squat jumps" after that.

Didn't know until a little while ago that July 4th 1939 was Lou Gehrig appreciation day when he made his famous Luckiest man speech. My niece Renee who was herself diagnosed with ALS last year just posted it on her Facebook page......So here is thinking about you Lou and Renee and all those who have suffered from this awful disease.
