I agree 100% with Josh Pate on this. If something isn't done it is going to ruin the game that is already well on it's way to being ruined.

Love to hear an explanation why Miami earholing the Cal player wasn't ruled targeting. Just an explanation.

The explanations that people came up with on these boards are probably close to the truth, and that's why you probably won't ever hear it come from them....

We never got one amd never will. As mentioned earlier though we know why. They call that and the game would have ended and the lead horse for the ACC would have lost to an inferior team. Not good for optics or finances

That's kind of the point that Pate is making. You won't hear an explanation. How could that crew review that play and conclude it wasn't a penalty at least and not obvious targeting that gets that player thrown out? We'll never know - there is no authority in college football that will provide an explanation or force one. Therefore you have rampant speculation that the ACC wanted to protect their cash cow and basically robbed Cal of a victory. He's right that it is BS and would be easy to fix. The fact that no one is bothering to do that is the next place everyone goes on the cynicism trail concluding that money is going to warp college football into something that people can no longer stomach.

I've changed my opinion about Pate. He turns out to usually be right about issues. He's one of the few voices out there making noise about this.

I don't think anyone thinks it was legit if you're referring to that TD pass play that got called back. Pate goes out of the way to say it doesn't necessarily mean that something nefarious is going on. He's saying the lack of accountability means that many will conclude that call was nefarious - I mean a written statement of what that ref was thinking when he called that would be a big step forward. Even a "my bad, I farked up" would be better than silence.

He needs a different job. All any of these guys ever do is tell us things we already know, but do it in a way to try to make you think they know more than you do.

Until they eliminate the conflict of interest inherent in the current system, we will continue to get crooked officiating

Got to do away with conference officials

It's not just that game. It's happens in others every week. Minnesota also got hosed by a phantom PI call to protect PSU. Unranked teams have to do more than beat a ranked team to win. Entertainment industry, conferences, gambling and mega bucks. The optics are terrible, if not dead on.

You're missing the point. What should be done about it?
I get it. You knew all along that this would happen as a result of widespread legalized gambling and massive influx of money into college football. Kudos. So you're cool with it?

We all know without his help — but he’s got a microphone and a podcast and can make noise that may not be able to be ignored forever. To me that’s his contribution. These guys and their podcasts, particularly those with a big following, can be influential. Think Joe Rogan didn’t have some influence in this recent election?

Let's keep politics off the sports boards. Someone already complained.

Two issues that can be leveraged to get attention and force them to address the lack of officiating transparency are player safety and money. I continue to bring the Cal/Miami game up because it's a perfect example of money interests over ethics and.....I just hate Miami and really wish they would have lost that game lol.

Really interesting comments from the Cal side in this article. Clearly their side struggled to use restraint when talking about the play and its also clear the conference/powers that be made it clear they shouldn't cross any lines when answering questions about it. This would have been a perfect time for Pate and other media to force the issue and address the lack of transparency from officiating because it dealt with player safety and the result of a game which also means conference AND betting money.

Cal Taking the High Road Regarding Non-Targeting Call in Miami Game

There are a number of examples of questionable calls and sometimes bad calls just happen however this process of involving the conference headquarters during a game reeks of corruption especially when they can't turn around and be completely transparent about the process that determined the final outcome.

On another note, I hope Bama fans continue to taste some reality. I've seen several claim the call against them was "the worst call ever."

Maybe karma is just being served a little late. Don't see them complaining about this non call from a few years back...
