The comment was a bit TIC and hyperbolic, but it does have a thread of truth to it.

Kids come hard wired with certain propensities and proclivities. Parents have to negotiate those.

....and sometimes parents do more damage than good in attempting to do so...sometimes they're down right powerless.

To put it as succinctly as i can--good parents usually yield good kids, and bad parents usually yield bad kids. However, many a really shitty person have come from great parents.... and many a great person has come from really shitty parents.

TBL, aint no guarantees in parenting, and I think that's what he was saying, if a bit sloppily.
