Jason Marshall has been a ginormous disappointment.

He was a 5 star coming from HS.

And under supposed DB guru Raymond he looks completely lost.

I think he’s trying to build through recruiting. Maybe he’s wrong but he wants his guys out of HS to buy into his program. Remember portal guys won’t start at their school or they’d stay. Sure theirs Pearsall who’s amazing but most are just mediocre spot fillers.

Maybe the term needs a name(s) change. When is the last time UF had a Jimmy or a Joe?

  8. This. The portal is not a magical place where former 3-stars turn into 5-stars just by switching teams, nor is it a place where former 5-stars who succeeded in one team willingly leave to perform at a 5-star level at the next place. There are some diamonds in the rough like former 3-star Ricky Pearsall performing like a 4-star, but there are plenty of 5-star transfers like Brenton Cox who performed like a 3-star.

Even though this is the era of transfer portal, Napier was brought here to fix the high school recruiting problems that have plagued UF since 2010 or so. Napier is doing good but not great with the portal. On paper some of these portal guys should be much better, but at the same time we can see why some transferred out of their old programs.

He doesn’t need to be fired, but he does need to improve his staff. Drastically.

We Had 500 yards of offense scored 35 pts.
    We just can't stop anyone
    Tacking is the biggest problem
    We have Wrs RBs. Lbs
DT and DBs We need a defence
500 yards on the road and lose big

Check the transfers out over the last couple years. Many blue chips are on other teams now. We are young, and not deep. If this class holds, and hopefully we portal in some seasoned talent, on hold on to the team we currently have, we probably still need some time. Next years schedule won’t be kind to a young team.

I’d say 10 games into a season is experience. Leadership starts at the top.

The chatter about that way of gaining experienced talent is that the teams that offer the most NIL cash get the best portal transfers. Simple as that. the "chatter is that FSU offered plenty of "NIL" consideration$$$ to get the instant talent that they did last year for this year's season.

My two cents.. and worth far less than that..
    1. There are two types of program builders.. hot flash in the pan quick jump types. Very very few will get the program to the promise land but they will jump the win total 2-3 per year.. Lane Kiffin is a great example (and maybe Lincoln Riley ?)
These coaches rely heavily on the portal nowadays (see FSU) but will have roller coaster careers unless the portal
Is ALWAYS a main building block.. hard to Great one year down for 2 or 3 years.
Then you have the foundation builders. They build the program slowly through recruiting, culture and a set program/plan. Saban, Harbaugh(yuck), Smart,…. They will use the portal to fill a few gaps but rely mostly on recruiting and development.
Their programs take longer to succeed but often (not always) maintain a level of excellence longer. My hope is that this is what Billy is doing.
    2. I am not happy with he defensive performance on the field. However I think it is foolish and premature to start calling for the DC to be fired .Far too often players were immolation to make a play but didn’t… whiffed tackles, whiffed pass break ups etc.. being in position is the DC job, making the actual play is on the player. AA inherited a lot of players that were not suited to what he wants. Why do think Castell is starting a head if highly ranked safeties?( that have now transferred out). I’m not convinced our corners are good at running our scheme.. but we’re recruited to run Grantham.
Our linebackers may find themselves getting beat out by this incoming class in the next 2 years. Our corners will certainly get beat out next year by the youngsters. Look at our WRs. A walk on, a transfer and a TrFreshman. Qb is a transfer. We need several recruiting cycles to build both sides of the ball.
Do I think Billy needs an OC? Absolutely! I also think he knows this and will hire one. I think a new one coach may also happen. But I agree the biggest issue is player talent. What would our offense look like with a dual threat Qb? Or a nasty oline. Ir more than 2 legit receivers (one a freshman)?
What would our defense look like with legit pass rushers at the DE who could set an edge? Fast quick twitch Db that play our coverage types? Linebackers that THUMP( we miss you SJ). Think Spikes would make a difference? Jevon Kearse? Lawrence Wright? Reggie Freakin Nelson? Tim Paulo? Joe Haden? Lito Sheppard?
We don’t have single player close to those two layers levels. Not one.
Got to give the coaches a few recruiting cycles
Everyone made fun of Kirby Smart his first few years.. great recruiting class but he didn’t know what to do with them.. that was the joke.. but he did know. He just needed time to take this great recruiting classes and he then as upper class men with 5stars on the bench behind them and more waiting on the committed list..it’s recruiting.

  18. The NIL 2.0 is still too new to fully integrate as the main recruiting tool. Sam Hartman is widely regarded as the #1 transfer portal QB but it has not translated into instant success. Spencer Rattler was the #1 transactions portal QB a few years ago and that also has not translated into into success. Deion Sanders swapped out an entire football team with portal transfers and look where he is after a few early successes.

And the loss against Arky? That had nothing to do with the horses. That wasn’t an outlier.
